'38! FOB! NORTH LEEDS LANTERN Lawrence Haywa A Man of Many Talents On an unobtrusive farm outside Elgin lives a talented and dedicated man.Lawrence Hayward left his highâ€" rise apartment in Toronto in the fall of 1973 to establish the Alpha Gallery on the Davis Lock Rd..The gallery is an educational museum focusing on the work of Canadian sculptors. Hayward has made it his life's work to document the lives and works of 65 Canadian Sculptors.Filling the gap in public collections,he has re- stricted himself to sculptors born 1840-1910.Included are F.A.T.Dunbar, George W.Hill,Soucy,Wyle,Loring, and Merle Foster. Travelling widely in his research, Mr.Hayward has preserved, photographed and recorded much work which otherâ€" wise would have been lost or destroyed. He is aware of the urgency of this work,as sculptors of this period are "dying like flies.” Lawrence Hayward has taken on the task of rescuing from obscurity a large part of Canada's sculptural heritage. Hayward's personal collection of sculpture is impressive indeed.Included are some 40 works in bronze, wood and plaster~mostly figurative and commem- orative. The display is enhanced by dazzling Cibachrome photographs pro- duced by Hayward himself. Although he has been unable to ob- tain government support for his work, Mr.Hayward does lectures and shows for libraries, historical societies and galleries. His Alpha Gallery is open to interested groups. He hopes to publish his research to make it available to a wider public. Plan to attend. rd lantern Profile It was a winding path which brought Lawrence Hayward to North Leeds.Born in Midland,0ntario in 1930,he attended Central Technical School in Toronto. As a young man he worked as a professional dancer in New York, and taught exercise and gymnastics. Hayward's interest in the healing arts lead him to train at the School of Massage in Toronto, where he became clinical director.Hayward explained how regular therapy can greatly re- lieve the crippling pain of arthritis. Massage reduces stress:'We need some stress for life, but not the hyper- stress which destroys."Although Mr. Hayward sought clients when he moved to the Elgin area,he says that local people have not taken advantage of his skills. An artist in his own right,Mr.Hay- ward has produced a series of pen and ink sketches of tne area.Presently. he is rendering some of his sketches in acrylic. His delicate yet powerful touch make the old buildings he paints come alive. Although at first he found that the "silence was deafening",Lawrence Hayward has adjusted to country life. He enjoys whatever he does-whether it be painting, teaching local youngsters, picking an evoeative melody on his guitar,or bending over file cards. And he can still bring to mind the sky- line of New York City as he gazes wistfully at the pines around his house.
