ELGIN LIONESS CLUB On December 16, 1980 the first meet- ing of the Elgin Lioness Club was held at the United Church Hall in Elgin. Election of officers was held, with Cheryl MacArthur being elected as president. The club now has a roster of over twenty members and should prove to be a strong addition to the community. ‘ The first thing done by the Lionesses was the Christmas carolling and donation of fruit baskets and home baking t0 local senior citizens. This was done in conjuction with the Elgin Lions Club. The experience was rewarding and the group has received many notes of thanks from the recipients of the gifts and good will. A business meeting was held on Jan. 6th at which time Gord MacArthur was chosen as our liason officer with the Elgin Lions Club. Ten new members signed up at this meeting. Future plans include catering a supper during the Winter Carnival in Elgin on Feb. 7th. We are also busy making plans for our charter night, tentatively planned for March 1bth. This will be a joint charter night with the Lions Club who will be celebrating 32 years of continued service to the community. The next meeting of the Lioness Club will be held on Feb. 3th at 7:30 p.m. at the Elgin Community Room. Anyone interested in becoming a charter mem- ber should contact Cheryl MacArthur at 359-5323 before March 3rd. The Season's Skating Tickets are the same as last year; $5.00 per person or $10.00 per family. Your membership ticket will help insure light, heat and the general financial operation of our rink. Our statistics are collected through each branch and show the services provided by our libraries to the area residents. In 1980 we had.l3?new members join the Union and circulated over 32,000 books. We purchased over 2,100 new books which were added to the collections of the various branches. We presented 3 special programmes to area children with the cooperation of the Public Schools. We had 3 exhibits, 1 from Royal Ontario Museum, 1 from the National Museum of Man and 1 from Ottawa. We had 4 exhibits from local residents, pottery, paintings and a collection of 1900's greeting cards. We offered a gift book selection again and this was well received. We are filling more reference requests and more borrowers are using the film ser- vice. Delta has a twice monthly film show for children which seems to be attracting the young people into the library. We will miss 2 hard working Board members with the resignations of Dorothy Davies and Greg Courneya but we welcome Jim Stedman and Karen Simpson to the Board. The Board consists of 12 members, 3 from each participating municipality. 0f the 3 members, 1 is a council mem- ber and the remaining 2 are appointed by their councils. Each member excluding council members serves a 2 or 3 year term. The following is the Board for 1981.
