no’ ~ mm BASKETBALL BEGINNING AND GROWING On March 10, 1981, Rideau Lakes Mini Basketball League completed its second successful season with a final game in the gymnasium at Rideau District High School. The league, inspired to provide a recreational opportunity for girls and boys in Grades 6,7, and 8, practised and played league games on Tuesday nights in local elementary school gymnasia. The 1980-81 season was expanded from the previ0us year and practices began last October. The first game was played October 21. All teams completed a 12 game schedule and a semi- final with two teams advancing to the final. The league comprised of four teams with coaches from the respective communities; Portland â€" Paul Arnold, Delta - Bruce Haskin, Elgin â€" Mike Murray, and Westport â€" Jeff Rice. The semi-final games on March 3 pitted Delta against Westport and Portland against Elgin. Delta and Portland advanced. Forthoseparents, friends and officials who came to the gym at R.D.H.S. on March lO, the air was electric. The enthusiasm generated by the young people prepared to play the final was tangible; the enthusiastic support of the spectators was gratifying. Delta and Portland played an exciting first half. The teams went to their respective dressing rooms with the score 15 - ll in fav0ur of Delta. Despite the aggressive defense of the Portland crew, Delta cagers took control in the second half to finish the game in front 38 - 20. After the game, crests were presented to all players of the four teams. A championship trophy donated by Gamble's Building Centre was presented to the winning team by Company represent- ative, Martyn Thomas. There are many people to thank for the success of our second year of operation: coaches who gave up Tuesday nights, Rideau District High School students who refereed all the games, elementary school principals whose enthusiasm and co-operation enc0uraged us all to continue, Ray Gamble for his financial support and to all the parents for help and understanding.
