Several new air-tight models have a device called a catalytic converter like those found in the pollution control equipment of automobiles. These converters reduce the emissions going up the chimney, burn the wood more efficiently and hence produce less creosote. They are presently quite expensive, but prices may drop in the future. The second approach to re- duce wood consumption is to in- sulate and tighten up our houses. Well-insulated, air-tight houses require less wood for heating and so release less pollutants from their chimneys.
