Now for the bad news. Recent studies on chimney emissions from wood heaters have revealed that a number of po- tentially harmful pollutants are present. Zhis creates a particular problem in urban areas where presence of a large number of wood heaters in a concentrated area may cause a dangerous build-up of emissions. However, rural wood burners should not consider themselves exempt from blame because the distance among houses is greater- the solution to pollution is not dilutionl It is important, then, that if we are going to heat with wood(or any fuel for that matter) we should use as little as possible. But we need not freeze in the process! There are two approaches to reducing the amount of wood we burn. IF YOU COULD --- WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME A NURSlNG ASSlSTANT? CNOW YOU CAN‘. LET ST. LAWRENCE COLLEGE SHOW YOU HOW’. There is a growing demand in Canada for qualified Nursing Assistants. You could help fill this demand, and earn an annual‘ average starting salary of between $ll,OOO and $l2,000. St. Lawrence College will show you how - by taking it one step at a time. The First step is to coll the Health Science Department at St. Lawrence College to talk with one of our qualified staff members who will guide you through your preparations to enter the program. These preparations may include obtaining your college upgrading level 3, or grade l0, including a college preparatory biology course to help you succeed in the program. Whatever your needs, St. Lawrence College can help you achieve your goal. The college offers a full-time Nursing Assistant Program during the day, and a part-time Program offered in the evening (3 evenings per week plus Saturdays). Or, if you wish, you can begin by taking one course. You may qualify for financial assistance while you prepare for the program, and while you take the program. LET ST. LAWRENCE COLLEGE HE LP YOU BECOME A NURSING ASSBTANT CALL TODAY TO FIND OUT HOW: The Health Science Department, St° Lawrence College, Brockville: 345-0660 Extension 288. =%- ST. LAWRENCE COLLEGE page 1? First, we can use an efficient air-tight stove that will ex- tract the most heat out of the wood. Several new air-tight models have a device called a catalytic converter like those found in the pollution control equipment of automobiles. These converters reduce the emissions going up the chimney, burn the wood more efficiently and hence produce less creosote. They are presently quite expensive, but prices may drop in the future. The second approach to re- duce wood consumption is to in- sulate and tighten up our houses. Well-insulated, air-tight houses require less wood for heating and so release less pollutants from their chimneys. Building a new energy-efficient house may yield the added benefit of being able to downsize the stove that you require to heat it. Not to mention the amount of time spent cutting woodl And speaking of energy- efficient houses... the wood heating season is caning to a rlose and as I think that people would not want to be reminded of winter all summer long, I have decided to focus on retro- fitting and building houses for energy-efficiency. The first article on this subject will appear next month. n5 usual, if you have any questions about wood heating or if there are particular areas thay you would like to see covered in the following months, please write: alan dolan, h R Seeley's day, ant ROE ZhO.
