P age 16 COMMENT Historically police village status was the first form of local government. In the old days the villages were settlements of business people, trades people, churches, schools, etc. and serVed the surrounding farm families. At this time, the population was higher in the villages than in the outlying areas. Now we have a reversal, with more residents living outside the village limits but the village residents still expect and should pay for additional convenience and services. While this is true, I would like to say that most of the village services are used by all Township residents eg â€" sidewalks, community rooms, banks, roads, stores. I think there must be a more equitable arrangement than the present. The police village mill rate can only increase and improved services will be impossible to achieve at the present level of taxation. I can appreciate paying additional tax for living in the village but I'm not sure we should be paying the total cost of everything within the village. After talking to Municipal Affairs officials they could not come up with a definite solution. What is the answer? Could we have more information from our trustees â€" see the budget â€" maybe in the North Leeds Lantern â€" attend some meetings and see if we can assist our trustees. Perhaps township council could also keep us informed â€" find out the facts, support your council by knowing the true facts. I was amazed at the frequent negative,and sceptical attitudes of residents towards their elected officials and more surprised at the misconceptions many had about municipal government. I am not soft-soaping but I do feel that with inflation, ‘ tight government control and the societal changes we are experiencing, these _,~iagrv _;:::j elected officials deserve our support (not blind support but intelligent and knowledge- '/’<;-'-' / ‘ able support) in the administration of our minicipal affairs.
