This is a busy time for Board mem- bers and staff as budget and policy reviews get under way. After 5 years of successful operation the Board begins its planning for the next 5 years. The Ontario Provincial Library Review which began early this year and is expected to produce recommendations and new Provincial guidelines, will have some input for local Board mem- bers. Mrs. S. Wilson, Mrs. J. OMeara and Mrs. D. Haskins attended a work- ship in Brockville on the Review. Mrs. M. Keates attended the Renfrew hearings and hopes to attend the Deep River Review with Mrs. P. Little who was asked to speak at these two hear- ings regarding the success of the Union Board. Listed below are some of the recommendations to come out of the Renfrew hearing. There should be special provincial "per square mile 0r area" grants for libraries with special needs, i.e. serving a sparce population over a wide area; Rideau Lakes Union Library which relies heavily on telephone communications and thus has high long distance charges using 4 different toll areas. The Library Act should be strength- ened and enforced. The boundaries of the 14 regional library systems should remain as presently defined. The Province should continue its funding role as a grant-giving agency. Per capita library grants should be spent for library services in the year for which they are given. The Library Act should be more specific re: appointment and make-up of a Union Library Board. The Board has again applied for a Youth Employment programme. If re- ceived the programme will be aimed at the location and delivery of services to the physically and educationally handicapped. The Board in conjunction with the Ministry of Culture and Recreation and E.0.L.S. will be sponsoring a Boardman- ship workshop. It is hoped that mem- bers of other library Boards will participate in this. Details will be announced at a later date. Eastern Ontario Library System is again assist- ing the local Board in the presentation of programmes. We are expecting some excellent shows and exhibits to be touring our area. To date we have had confirmation of the following â€" Richard Lyons Dance Troupe, (Native people dance and sing in full dress of the Ojibway), Jan Rubes, singer (TV and radio performer, also appeared in Walt Disney's "The Incredible Journey") and Tony German, author (Tom Penny and ’ River Rat). Watch for dates, times and place for these and other inter- esting shows.
