Approximately 300 people sat down to a roast beef dinner which included an abund- ance of milk and cheese. The milk was donated by Norm and Kay Merriman, Elgin. The Forfar Dairy had pledged not only the net proceeds but had promised to match dollar for dollar, the proceeds which were to be spent on Loan Cupboard equip- ment in support of the North Leeds Home maker service. Reverend Harry Seeley, Elgin, gave the blessing before dinner. After dinner, master of ceremonies Sterling Patterson, Forfar, introduced the head table: the Honour- able Eugene Whalen, Minister of Agriculture for Canada; Tom Cossitt, M.P. for Leeds. Jane Eyre, Leeds County Dairy Princess and Reverend Seeley. Sterling introduced Talmage Stone, President of ForfarDairy, who thanked all those attending .ie dinmer. He than named various businesses and groups who had purchased blocks of tickets and included a witty comment about each one. Leeds County Dairy Princess Jane Eyre addressed the guests mentioning how much she had enjoyed her reign which is now drawing t0>a close. She offered to provide inform- ation to anyone interested in entering the Dairy Princess competition. Mike Freeman and sons Greg and Michael of Elgin rendered beautiful vocal present- ations of two hymns: How Great Thou Art and Mansion ï¬ver the Hilltop. Tom Cossitt preceded his introduction of Mr.Whelan by praising all the Directors of the Forfar Dairy and, in particular, Talmage Stone, for their successful oper- ation of the dairy and for their great interest in their own community. Mr Cossitt set aside political differences in introducing Mr»Whelan, saying that the latter was one of the hardest working members of Parliament and a very good Minister of Agriculture. Mr.Whelan thanked Mn Cossitt and once again words of praise were extended to Talmage and the Forfar Dairy. The main thrust of Mr Whelan's speech dealt with the advantages of supply-management boards such as the milk and egg marketing boards whose success he contrasted with the beef and pork industries which are facing greater financial difficulty. Between the formal parts of his speech he inserted examples of what he has witnessed at home and abroad plus the opinions of foreign politicians who have visited Canada. Following Mr Whelan's speech , Marion Stone. executive secretary of the Forfar Dairy, presented a cheque for $1500.00 to Homemaker supervisor Sharon Stedman. Sharon thanked all those who had attended and in particular the Directors of the Forfar Dairy, whose efforts made the dinner such a success and who so gen- erously doubled the evening's net proceeds. The money will be spent on Loan Cupboard equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and commodes which are very much needed for patients being cared for at home Judy Pattinson and Sharon Horsefield Judv Pattinson, left, and Sharon Horsfall, members of Eta Tau Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi are shown with some of the 490 bunches of daffodils sold in this area recentlv.
