PORTLAND COMMUNITY HALL BOARD 0n Wednesday, April 8th the Portland Community Hall Board celebrated the cli- max of the Wintario renovations to the hall and the expansion of the Portland Library to include a special children's room. Speakers for the evening extended many kind words in support of the efforts of the hall board and Portland com- munity, who helped raise $9,900 of the money required to fund the $37,540 project. Reeve Goodson Mattice commended the Hall Board members over the past 3 years for their efforts in raising money and seeing this renovation pro- ject completed. David McBride, Field Consultant for the Ministry of Culture and Recreation extended his congratulations, and also best wishes on behalf of MPP Reuben Baety, Minister of Culture and Recre- ation. A letter of congratulations from MPP for Leeds, Robert W. Runciman especially commended the volunteers who con- tributed their time and energies to ensure the success of this venture. Diane Haskins, Portland Library Hall Board Member introduced Larry Eshel- man, Director of the Eastern Ontario Library Board. Mr. Eshelman spoke highly of the strong efforts to es- tablish the Rideau Lakes Union of Li- braries in this area. Re encouraged the community to continue to support their local library. On behalf of the Library Board, Mr. Eshelman presented Diane Haskins a set of valued prints of children's story characters to be hung in the Portland Library. A book was also donated by Joan Asquith, a Portland area resident and operator of The Bookery in Ottawa. Diane Haskins warmly thanked Mr. Esh- elman for the gifts. She also recog- nized the hard work and efforts of the Library members and made special recog- nition of past Reeve Fred Lake and the support he gave when the Union of Li- braries was started. Ray Gamble, President of R.L. Gamble Ltd. commended the Board on the suc- cess of this project for the community and expressed his pleasure at being able to complete the work with local tradesmen during a time of weak em- ployment. Paul McNamara, on behalf of the Board Chairman John MacDonald, thanked Ray Gamble and his workmen for a good job done and especially for the financial support in ensuring the project was completed within budget. The traditional ribbon cutting was performed by Reeve Goodson Mattice and David McBride. In closing, past Reeve Fred Lake ex- tended his congratulations to the Board for a job well done and shared with everyone one of his short stories. Everyone was then invited to join in the coffee and cookies served by Clara Hall, Claire Myers and Judy Pattinson. A member of the O.P.P. gave a talk and showed the film "Safety and Snowmobiles." Lynn Myers did a great job co-ordinating the dinner - thanks! The local Kub Kar Rally was held March 16, with the trophy donated by Stan Haskin and won by Jeremy Sheldon. Nine out of eleven Cubs attended the Kub Kar Rally in Smiths Falls and three made it to the finals. Doug Bond reported the Scouts enjoyed the "Survival in Winter" class at Foley Mountain despite the weather - it rained. The Beavers also took a trip to Foley Mountain, to tour the Beaver Pond and the weather was much more co-oper- ative. There was a good turn out of parents and Mr. Barry McOuav did a great iob keeping all entertained as well as informed. Mr. Paul McNamara has a display of pictures at the Royal Bank in Portland of this event. Come out and see what fun Beavers can he. Robert Lee, Doug Bond, Jim Bell and Stan Haskin all attended the Wood Badge I training held recently in Smiths Falls. Nine hundred packages of Easter buns were delivered to Doug Bond. He then dispersed them to Stan & Robert and all were delivered to the Scouts and Cubs. This is a great proje;* for the boys and the community is very supportive. ’
