f ._...a... MM“. A- -_.<â€" A_-M ‘ - «wwwâ€" Elgin U.C.W. The Elgin U.C.W. met in the Centenâ€" ial Hall of the Church for their May meeting with 20 members present. The President Mrs. Nina Churchill opened the evening meeting with a reading, "What is a Mother?" The worship group used the theme "Stewardship of Our Talents" which is time, environment, treasure. Scripture used was Matthew 25:14-30. The offering was received and dedicated and worship ended with the hymn, "For the Beauty of the Earthâ€. The evenings study continued on the stewardship theme which was a film callâ€" ed â€What Can a Christian Do?" Mrs. Seeley introduced a film discussion and pointed out that Mr. and Mrs. Hankâ€" ins of Nepal have attended Elgin United Church when they were home on leave from their mission work in Nepal,where they work in a hospital. The film menâ€" tions that missionaries are invited only by that host country for certain areas. It was felt our own support could be in giving voice in countries where partiality and harm is shown to human races or the very poor. The business began with the roll call and minutes of the last meeting. The treasurer gave the monthly report. It was decided to give a donation to the Leeds Cancer Society. New jugs have been bought for the kitchen. Labels are still being saved for certain pro- jects and June's item for supply will be used eye glasses. Several members have returned inviâ€" tations from other U.C.W.'s: an Easter program with the Delta U.C.W. when their guest speaker reflected on the Year of the Disabled, a noon luncheon with the Olivet U.C.W. who had Mrs. Quammie of Seeleys Bay who spoke about Haiti; and the Portland U.C.W. who had a special display of quilts old and new. All were enjoyable. The business ended with a reading and everyone enjoyed the lunch and fellowship with one another later. ELGIN LIONESS CLUB The Elgin Lioness Club held their last regular meeting of the i980â€"81 year on June 16th. Many items were discussed and finished off. These included: â€"Yard and Bake sale to be held on July 4th at Lioness Naydene Shanks starting at 10:00 a.m. â€"Muscular Dystrophy carnival to be held on July 22nd to coincide With the Lions' 2-pitch tourna- ment at the South Crosby Public School. -the new Liason officer is Lion Glynn Guthrie â€"In October we will hold a memberâ€" ship drive. All the Lioness members are looking forward to a good year beginning in the fall and wish to thank everyone in the community who has supported us in this, our first year. Elgin U.C.W. The June meeting of the Elgin U.C.W. opened with the president, Mrs. Nina Churchill welcoming the guests from the surrounding groups, and members for the evening program. Special guest for the evening was Mrs. Joan Simpson of Gananâ€" oque, director of the Gananoque Arc Centre. The president opened the meeting with a reading "What Handicap Means", and the worship group continued the theme to give thoughtful and careful support to persons with a handicap whatever it may be. The study period with Mrs. Simpson's talk and her slides showed her love and caring for the Arc Centre and the work accomplished there. The U.C.W. were also fortunate to have Sister Julia Hamilton of Guate- mala visiting her family in Elgin to attend the evening program. Sister Julâ€" ia also gave an account of helping the handicap persons and how they try to help them in that country. The evening was certainly a learning and beneficial one to all, showing great dedication and love for humanity by each speaker. ELGIN C.W.ll..j The June meeting of the Elgin C.W.L.- took the form of a beautiful luncheon at Hotel Kenney, Jones Falls. It is our 50th Anniversary year so all charâ€" ter members were invited and we were pleased to see that some were able to attend. All Elgin born priests and forâ€" mer priests were also invited but unâ€" fortunately were unable to attend. Our own Father F. O'Neil opened the meal with Grace. Former presidents were all in attâ€" endance and were introduced by our pre- sent president Mrs. Liz MacNamara whom we are sorry to lose as she and her husband are transferred to Hastings where Mr. MacNamara will again be Bank Manager. Mrs. Kathryn Scott paid tri- bute to Liz for her excellent work and presented her with a plaque from the C.W.L. We wish them all the best. All of the charter members and forâ€" mer presidents were presented with silk corsages. Also a beautiful floral centre piece was made and donated by an artis- tic friend, Mrs. Joan Avery. The Fiftieth Anniversary Cake was beautifully decorated. It was cut by the charter members. After grace was said the group of 75 members and guests proceeded across to the Convention Hall where our guest speaker was Sister Julia Hamilton from Guatemala. She was introduced by Mrs. Margaret O'Meara who outlined a very interesting history of Sister's life in this vicinity. Sister spoke on her work in Guatemala and how our donations from Canada are spent. We have even furnished stoves for poor families. She also read a letter from one of our beneficiaries. Sister translated it from Spanish. She had many interesting pictures. Samantha Moylan thanked Sis- ter for her lovely talk and donated a cheque to her. Father O'Neil thanked the C.W.L. for their coâ€"operation and congratulated them on their 50th Anniversary. The meeting closed with prayer. During the month we had two projects I. a catering to a wedding reception, 9. a dinner for the Legion. Both pro- jects were most successful. There was also a supplementary June meeting held at the Rectory following Mass. The president opened the meetâ€" ing with prayer. Minutes and treasurers ,reports were read and approved. Teresa Vanderwerf reported on the Right to Life Meeting she attended. President Liz thanked the members for her gift and for their co-operation during her term of office. Margaret ’ Courneyea gave a report on the Conven- tion held in Kingston. This was the 59 Diocesan Convention. A report was givâ€" en on the preparations for the 150th South Crosby Public School received an award Anniversary of the Rideau Waterway in for studies in the work of St. John's Amâ€" bulance. Twentyâ€"three Grade 8 students became qualified. Shown holding the Award are John Kenyon manager of the Ontario Council and Ross Hawkins who taught the First Aid Course. Principal Clifford Smith looks on. 1982. This included an Ecumenical Serâ€" vice. Plans were made to have our usâ€" ual coffee party after the Masses on the Sundays of the two holiday weekends of the summer. Mrs. Maureen McCarthy kindly consented to act as President for the coming term. A vote of thanks was moved to our retiring President, Liz MacNamara, by Kathryancott for the fantastic job she has done during her office as Pres- ident.
