The Chaffey's Lock 8: Area Heritage Society took advantage of this historic event and combined it with theofficial opening of the Lockmaer's House Museum for thel984 season. Among the special guests who brought greetings were: the Honourable Jennifer Cossit, MP for Leeds 8: Grenville; Everton Strong, Reeve of South Crosby, John Bonser, Assistant Director for Ontario Region-Oarks Canada 8: Dave Day, Superintendant of the Rideau Canal. The crew and communities along the canal made presentations to the Heritage Society in 'a ceremony which took place on the lawn near the mooring site of the Durham boat. Approximately 100 people watched as Bob Haig, representing the National Capital Commission, presented a beautiful shawl made by the Weaver's Shop in Manotick, to the museum. Another presentation was an attractive framed print of a Durham Boat. Following the Official ribbonâ€"cutting ceremony, all present were invited into the museum to view the displays as invited guests and crew were entertained upstairs at a small reception. The Lockmaster's House Museum is operated by the Heritage Society which leases the premises from Parks Canada. This is the museum's third year of operation. The exhibit this year, entitled Shaping the Foundations â€" Patterns of Settlement, commemorates Ontario's Bicentennial year by attempting to show the migration of people into South Crosby. .. The LockmaSter's House Museum has received a grant from the Secretary of State, Canada, to fund a Craft Demonstration Program. After welcoming everyone, the hostess read an interesting Spiritual reading which was very apropos to the interesting Homily that Father O'Neill had given on the previous Sunday. Plans for refreshments for visitors and parishioners after Mass on July lst was reviewed. Parishioners are asked to bring some "goodies". A report was given on the Communion Breakfast held at the Hotel Kenney. A vote of thanks was moved to the Kenney's for the delicious meal as well as the work of their efficient staff. The group then moved to Convention Hall where we heard a most thoughtâ€"provoking message on pornography. Our guest speaker, Mr. John Osborne, was introduced by Samantha Moylan. He explained some of the work he and his coâ€"workers are involved in in attempting to stamp pornography out. He had most interesting examples of the unbelievable literature that is readily available on our shelves. Kathryn Scott thanked the guest speaker and gave him a donation on behalf of the parishes to further his work. Report on the Garage Sale revealed a nice profit. President Sherri Murray & Sec. Samantha Moylan reported that their attendance at the annual convention had been most interesting and informative. Maureen McCarthy reported she had delivered all her stock of Wedding gifts and needed to purchase more. She also gave out lovely gifts for First Holy Communion. Sue Alford then addressed the group on her work at Kingston General Hospital. She explained the procedures for admitting & discharge and what happens when patients have to wait for the scarce hospital beds. A question period followed then Gen Donovan thanked Sue for her time and interesting talk and presented her with a gift in appreciation. Door prize was won by Debbie Kenney. Everyone was asked to think of ideas for future meetings to have input to the convenor and her helpers. Volunteers were also requested to host future meetings in their homes. The meeting adjourned after a most successful year. The executive have done a great job and the influx of new members has been most gratifying.
