RIDEAU LAKES HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY The Society held a successful Flower 8: Vegetable Show in Portland on Aug. 18/84 Under the chairmanship of Fred Fleming, Newboro, an enthusiastic committee set up and arranged over 200 exhibits from 45 exhibitors in the Upper level of Portland Community Hall. An exhibit by Doug Green of Simple Gifts Farm, Lower Oak Leaf Road and a sale table offered a wide variety of house plants, garden perennials, garden produce and cut flowers for sale. After the judging by Ownen Munn, Dept. of Agriculture, Ottawa, the show was opened to the public. During the afternoon a substantial and delicious tea was served in the lower hall by Myrtena McVean and her committee. Late in the afternoon, Robert Walker, Society vice-president, introduced Mr. Goodson Mattice, Reeve of Bastard 8: Burgess Township, who presented prizes to the show's top winners. The winners were: for aggregate standing- First-Fred Fleming, Newboro; Secondâ€"Florence Hutchings, RR#2 Portland, Thirdâ€"Robert Walker, Westport; Junior Section- Meredith Campbell, RR#1 Portland, For best in show- Section A Veda Bolton, Portland; For a basket of annuals celebrating Ontario's bicentennial- Section B Evalyne Bell, Newboro For a cactus display-Section C Don Williams, Westport; For an arrangement of flowers 8: vegetables celebrating Ontario's bicentennial-Section Dâ€" Sandy Merryweather, RR#3 Portland; For a tremendous cabbage-Section E (juniors) Meredith Campbell â€"for an imaginative use of vegetables to depict a cow. The Society wishes to thank all those who entered exhibits to the make the hall so attractive and interesting, those who visited the show and patronized the plant sale and teaâ€"room, and those who spent the many hours necessary to make the show run smoothly. ENJOY POT LUCK DINNER AT COTTAGE Mrs Stella Cheetham was hostess to the Association of Superannuated Women's Teachers on July 6 at her cottage near Delta. The women enjoyed a delicious potluck dinner after being welcomed by the hostess and grace said by Ina Scott. A short business meeting followed during which an invitation was extended from Lansdowne UCW for a Dec. meeting and dinner at noon. The group selected Dec. 6/84 as the date. Past Pres. Kathryn Scott presented the new slate of officers for the coming year. They are as follows: Pres. Stella Cheetham, lst 8: 2nd Vice-Pres. to be named, Sec. Marg CouRneya, Treas. Doris Potter, Convenoreâ€"Telephone-Annie Seaman, Elgin with Ruth Chisamore & Winona Keyes, Lansdowne, Dora Bell, Gananoque, Nina Churchill, Elgin, Martina McVean, Portland, Rita Hollister, Lyndhurst and Etheleen Tye, Seeley's Bay as assistants. At this juncture in the meeting, the new president, Mary Townsend, took charge in her new role and thanked everyone for their participation. Doris Potter, District Director, reported briefly on the June Convention held in Peterboro, stressing that it had been a busy time and she was impressed with reports of volunteer work done by other groups of OASWT and hoped more could be done in the future by this group. NORTH LEEDS LANTERN page 11 Regrets were received from Kingston group, who could not attend the potluck dinner. The group expressed sympathy to the families of those recently bereaved by the deaths of Lena McNeill, Neeta Hetherington and Neil Ellis. A short report from delegate Marg Courneya was given concerning the convention. She will give a more detailed report at the next meeting. She was also impressed with the work of the "super-animated" teachers in volunteer efforts and also the excellent attendance by the Gananoque area group. A couple of humorous stories were related by M. Rowswell and Mrs Shelley.
