Page 8 NORTH LEEDS LMTERI PORTLAND BASTARD & SOUTH BURGESS NON-PROFIT HOUSING CORPORATION Progress on our Senior Citizen Housing has been slow over the summer due to re-organization and personnel changes at the Ministry in Toronto. Mr. John Sloan, the Ministry co-ordinator was moved to Northern District, Sudbury. Mrs. Suzan Stilling became coâ€"ordinator for our district and has been most co-operative and helpful. However, on Sept. 4/84 we will come under the Ottawa District office and a new coâ€"ordinator. At last count we had received 70 applications. The second phase of applications has been completed in which more information was obtained to support our request for more than 20 units. Site evaluation is continuing and is entering the engineering stage which includes soil testing, water testing for quality & quantity, environmental and feasibility studies. All of these take time and we hope we will soon have some positive results. The Administrative committee is working on an Administration Manual. Progress is being made and everyone 15 working together as best and as fast as we can. BICENTENNIAL A ceremony to observe the bicentennial of Ontario was held at the Municipal Office, Chantry on July 14/84 A Bi-centennial Flag donated by the Province of Ontario was raised. The mortgage on the building was burned. It was five years to the day when the building was occupied. Guests who assisted with the ceremonies wereMr. Cecil Kinch, County Warden, Mr. George Brown, County Clerk Administrator, Mr. Fred Dolman, Deputy County Clerk Treasurer & mr. Walter Cochrane of MTC. Reeve Goodson Mattice was master of Ceremonies. Former Reeve Fred Lake gave the history of the municipal building from planning to construction & occupancy. The guests congratulated the Township for the fine building and for paying off the mortgage in such a short time. An update on the Senior Citizen Housing was presented. The Bi-Centennial program of publishing a book on the historical study of heritage buildings is in the preliminary stage and was on display during this event. A social hour and lunch was thoroughly enjoyed by all A Bi-Centennial cake made by Ruby Flynn was most attractive and admired by all. ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION RIDEAU LAKES BRANCH #231 With what seems like a short summer nearly gone, a new season with new challenges and experiences is at hand. We hope that everyone had a pleasant and rewarding holiday, are fully energized and ready for a new season. The highlight of our summer activities was the Annual Bass Derby. It was the biggest derby ever this year and concluded with a Fisherman's Ball on July 14/84 at which the many prizes were awarded. This year we had 2 coâ€"sponsors; Waterside Restaurant 8: the Westport Mirror. A total of 253 bass were entered by 85 fishermen. The grand prize-a 14' aluminum boat was won by Len Pyne, Chaffey's Lock with a 61b 2 02 bass. Congratulations are extended to all the prize winners and a vote of thanks and appreciation to everyone who assisted in making the Derby a huge success. A planning meeting was held Ju1y5 to plan our activities from Sept/84 to June/85 Legion Week will be celebrated in Ontario from Sept. 16 to 22. A message from the Premier of Ontario says it all. Legion Week will be opened with our Annual Church Service at the Elgin United Church on Sunday Sept. 16 at 11:00 a.m. All Legion members, Ladies Aux. 8r Veterans are invited. Legion dress if available, if not normal dress. Medals to be worn. Form up at 10:45 a.m. The Municipality of Bastard 8: S. Burgess has proclaimed the week of Sept. 16-22. Legion Week. Congratulations and good wishes are extended to Upper Rideau Branch #542 Westport. They have worked hard the past few months getting the branch active again. We look forward to a close association with them. Our sincere good wishes for a speedy recovery goes out to our Zone Commander, Comrade Ed Brown, who is a patient in the Kingston General Hospital. PORTLAND FIRE DEPARTMENT CELEBRATES 30th ANNIVERSARY On July 27, 28, 8: 29 Portland Volunteer Fire Dept. celebrated 30 yrs. in service to the community and area with numerous activities. The weekend included a Firemen's Parade, Antique Fire Truck Display, Fishing Derby, Horse Shoe competition and Beer gardens sponsored by Molsons. A dunk tank was thoroughly enjoyed by young and old alike. Saturday afternoon the Fire Truck Parade was heard by all as they circled the village. Other depts entered in the parade included Delta, Elizabethtown, Kitley, Lanark, Montague, Seeley's Bay, South Crosby, Westport and of course leading the parade was Portland along with the Model "T" Fire engine owned by Pat McManus. ‘ Following the parade the trucks were on display at the Portland Community Hall for anyone wishing a closer look at the equipment on the vehicles. Each dept. entering in the parade was presented with a plaque donated by Molsons. On Sunday, a Horseshoe Tournament was held. Those participating had lots of fun.
