The Conference for rural women who are leaders or potential leaders in their communities will be held November 16â€"18, 1984 at Geneva Park Conference Centre near Orillia. The Conference program has been designed so participants may"....learn to do by doing." Workshops at Turning Point will focus on a wide range of topics of concern to rural women including; networking, building positive community attitudes, lobbying, finding the courage to change, developing 8: strengthening organizations, determining community needs and "finding the little red hen's friends"- Other Conference activities include theme speakers, discussion groups and a concert with singer-songwriter (8: rural woman) Heather Bishop. Quilting has a long and colourful history as a traditional craft. Today it is considered a fabric art form, used for clothing, window coverings, wall hangings, household accessories and of course bed quilts. The list of quilted items is endless. This fall, in Leeds County, the 4â€"H program will be offering a 4-H Quilting project to young people between the ages of 12 and 21. This project should appeal to members of all levels of experience in sewing and crafts. Whether you are a master or novice quilter, we have something for everyone. Come and learn some basic techniques such as simple quilting, string quilting and applique. All members will be required to complete 3 samples and a special quilted project. Those with a little more experience will have the chance to use their creative talents by choosing a more challenging design for their quilted project. If you suffer from the following symptoms when seeing a quilted article....bulging eyes; quickened heart-rate; drooling mouth; an insatiable need to learn how to quilt; twitching fingers.....then my professional diagnosis would indicate that you have "Quilter's Fever". The only known cure in Leeds County is to join a 4-H Quilting Club in your area. Contact Bev Bolger, your R.O. Specialist at O.M.A.F., 10 Sunset Blvd., Perth, Ont, (267-1063) for more information. GIANT BOOK SALE A SUCCESS ..»The annual book sale held by the Rideau Lakes Union Library was the best ever...not only with the largest selection of books, but with the largest amount of money raised to date. Over $500.00 will be added to the book budget from this event. As usual, the sale hit one of the hottest days of the summer but buyers and browsers kept staff busy from 9a.m. to Z:30p.m. as they made their selections from thousands of items. Many books had been donated by other libraries,(Pembroke 8: Prescott) and the Board extends their thanks to these donors. While help was short, special thanks go to Bill Mather for his help in setting up, Art Gordoneare for transporting tables, Nola Gordoneare of Halladay Store for supplying a much needed and appreciated flow of ice cold drinks, Kay Shanks, who assists at every year's book sale and Art Keates, who rescues us annually with the tremendous chore of removing the "left-overs". Three of the twelve Board members assisted for periods during the day.(Jane Monaghan, Lynne Evans 8: Karen Simpson) Staff help included Pat Little, Marjorie Keates and the summer student employees, Kevin Guthrie & Bart Breedyck. Thanks again to the Bank of Montreal for allowing us to operate the sale at their lot on Main Street, Elgin. The Board wishes to thank all those who assisted with the sale and special thanks to those buyers who helped RR1,DELTA _________________ fill the coffers for our new book budget.
