Page 2 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN As I struggle with my umpteenth attempt to write a pertinent article on the Election, I am aware of the pressures placed on all of us by the various media. The polls combined with the numerous "kingâ€"making" articles and news casts is almost unnecessary! From the Liberal Leadership Convention, we have had the major papers swinging madly to and fro between the two major parties while alternately saying the N.D.P. will lose its power base and now (in the latter days of the campaign) will increase its support. Looking back over the campaign, the two "big" boys were aptly named the "Bobbsey Twins". As the race entered the middle stages, "footâ€"in-mouth" twins or "if you can foul up, I can do it better" pair seemed more appropriate. While the song "Promises, Promises" should have been the theme for all parties, I longed for just one leader to state that things are going to be tough BUT we can look to better times. Instead we heard platitudes to almost every special interest group, from women to youth , to small business and the unemployed. The only excitement throughout this exercise has been awaiting the next "faux pas" . After the first debate, it seemed we had reached a point where the past was more important than the future and the winner was the one who could appear the most irrate. After the women's issues debate, I renounced being a woman and was amazed at those who could not see the leaders simply placating those whom they appeared before. The issues facing the Canadian population were set out simply before this campaign: the economy, unemployment, & the deficit. Federal - Provincial relations are an important component in all of these basic areas. What have we heard about? Women‘s issues, abortion, disarmament 8: patronage! (at least from the leaders of all parties) I feel sorry for local candidates who appear to be carrying the leaders on their backs when it comes to facing the knowledgeable and concerned electorate. While the NDP have attempted to cover most issues, they also have spent considerable time on the lesser issues. Most people realize that ALL issues are important but the major ones must be dealt with before any goals can be achieved in other areas. Personally I have not found "my" party. Between now & Sept. 4/84 I will be doing some serious thinking. I WILL VOTE as should every Canadian! Apathy and confusion are not reasons to give up your duty. Some party must be elected and your vote makes sure your are represented! Various pundits have indicated that there may be low voter turn-out. This would be detrimental to our nation. Perhaps Canada should adopt the Australian system, which allows for fines if one doesn't vote! That way the powers that he certainly know how gllthe citizens feel! My problem in selecting a party is that I'm too lucky! I am happily married, supported by an employed man...with a "little" job of my own to keep our second vehicle on the road and enjoy some of the "nicer" things in life. I've never been abused physically and have had no desire for an abortion. I also have been of the opinion, (& still am) that I am as equal too and worth as much as any man. I have not been required to live on unemployment or welfare and am willing to contribute my time to issues and works classified as charitable or volunteer! This background does not make me less concerned about the multitude of problems many of our population face but I believe that there are many basic problems that governments cannot solve...that we, as a society, have to be prepared to become involved and attempt to solve them ourselves, away from the political arena. On one hand we are bombarded with the "work ethic“ while on the other we are told to prepare for more leisure. What a paradox make me feel that my vote Editorial Page when more and more families have two or more jobs, children are placed in day care...many not for need but simply so that parents can have more access to the materialistic things in life. Every issue brings more confusion but I am old fashioned on many. I don't believe government should be asked to do everything! nor do I believe that, because of my personal view point that I do not feel for those in unfortunate circumstances. On abortion, it should be the individual‘s wishes BUT on a realistic and financial point, one free 8: after that the individual pays! No-one can believe that abortion is an acceptable method of birth control! On Day care..those who need to work and require child care should be subsidized...but why not have an extension of employer support for this type of care. After all it is the employer who needs the worker and is more capable of adjusting to the needs. On "Affirmative Action"...a simple statement that the best person for the job will be hired would solve many of the % hiring ideas now being bandied about. Finally, looking at Canada as a world member, we simply have to increase productivity and better the quality of goods and services. While the politicians placate us with the multitude of issues on their agendas, our trade abroad suffers! We have a great resource in this country of ours. We have not come near its potential but it will take a lot of hard work, belt tightening and understanding to reach that goal.
