Correspondence included thank you notes as well as donations to the W.I. coffers from "Summer Ladies" While not members, these ladies appreciate the work of the organization. Their donations are much appreciated. The upâ€"dating of the cookbook is continuing and the new edition will contain a more diversified selection of recipes. Each member has been asked to contribute 5 recipes and these will be collated by Betty Franklin 8: her committee. Publication 8: price will be announced later. While looking for something different to send to life member Maybelle Hughson, (in a nursing home) one of the nurses suggested a lap rug. It was decided to adopt this as a WI project. The group will be knitting or crocheting rugs, approx 2' wide by 3' long. They will be given, not only to Maybelle, but to other residents of the home, in Maybelle's name. The supplies cupboard being built in the Community Hall will soon be completed and will provide excellent storage for a variety of supplies. Mary Warren, District President, gave an informative talk on the upâ€"coming Area Convention being hosted at Chaffey's Lock. Luncheon will be served in the Opinicon Dining room and music for "stretch" interludes will be provided by Kathryn Scott. Entertainment will consist ofa"show &tell" display of the branch's accomplishments including specimens of the rug braiding course and the newly made lap rugs. A Bicentennial display as well as a reception hosted by Chaffey's Branch will precede dinner at the Opinicon. Motto for the meeting was "What the environmental issue boils down to is: Human nature versus Mother Nature The Bicentennial statement was "James Phillips, the colourful founder of Philipsville, was the son of a LOyalist family. He later became a reformer and rebel in 1838. He met his death in the Battle of the Windmill at Prescott". Roll call was "He has not learned the lesson of life who does not every day surmount a fear". This allowed the group to have an interesting discussion about their private fears and it was interesting to note that everyone has something they are afraid of. Ellen Bonwill then showed a branch of high bush cranberries. The cranberry is an indigenous wild plant of North America. These high bush berries make excellent jelly ’ but are not too good for cranberry sauce. Mary Warren then gave an interesting and informative talk on the art of drying and arranging flowers and weeds. The beautiful selection shown indicated what one can accomplish with patience and artistic ability. Mary covered the topic from collecting, drying and colouring to the arrangement of the dried plants. Many of the ladies then took a walk with Ellen along the trails of Skycroft and viewed many of the plants used in their natural habitat. The next meeting will be Oct 11/84 at the home of Lola Timpany, at Clear Lake. It is hoped to have speech pathologist Ester Barker as the guest speaker. She will talk about her work with children's speech defects and the assistance given to stroke victims to help them regain their speech. Minutes, roll call and treasurer-'5 report were all given. Correspondence included many thank you notes. The convenors reported on their respective roles. The garage SALE was a huge success 8: it was decided it should be an annual event. Margaret Murray read a short Spiritual reading and also suggested we meet weekly in October for the Rosary. Reports on the coffee parties for July lst and Labour Day weekends were both successful 8: sociable. Another clothes drive will take place in October and all are asked to contribute as generously as last year. A presentation was made to Father O'Neill, our Spiritual Director, as a token of our appreciation for all he does for us and his constant support. Various members were asked for their homes for meetings as well as first hostesses for the ensuing year. Our group is invited to a Pot Luck supper at St. Barnabas, Brewer's Mills on Sept.17 when the speaker will be Mrs. Lillian O'Connor, Sec-Treas. National level. Kathryn Scott displayed a CWL banner that she had made and a vote of thanks was extended for her work. Our president told us that Father Paul Hamilton will be saying a Mass in Elgin on Sept. 22 which is the anniversary of his father's death. The Mass will be at 7:30p.m. and we are having a reception for him after Mass at the Senior Citizen's Hall. The monthly draw was won by Mrs. Margaret Hamilton. She received a beautiful hand woven scarf donated by Sister Julia Hamilton. Sister was our guest speaker and gave us an inspirational message on her missionary work in Guatemala. She was presented with a gift and a vote of thanks was moved by Samantha Moylan. We decided to adopt and help financially a Guatemalan priest which pleased Sister very much.
