CHAFFEY'S LOCK W.I. The April 11th meeting began with a lunch followed by the viewing of a film entitled "The Erland Lee Home 8: W.I. Beginning" which was excellent. Following the singing of the Institute Ode and the recitation of the Mary Stewart Collect the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's report was given with the auditors reporting the books balanced and the group in financially good shape. It was moved and passed that the Chaffey's Lock W.I. become a memberof the Rideau Waterway Asociation with dues allocated accordingly. Reports were then received from the standing committees. Delegates to the next District Annual are Cathy Murray and Thea Dodge. Susan Alford who stepped down from the secretary‘s position will be curator of the Tweedsmuir History. Auditors will again be Betty Strong and Jean Rowswell. Euchres will be handled by Glenna Langlois 8: Bea Hughson. Thea Dodge will continue as District Director and Public Relations Officer is Lola Timpany with Kathryn Eberhard as correspondent. The following slate of officers was presented by Linda Pyne, chairperson of the nominating committee. Past Pres.-Laurel Fleming, Pres.-Cathy Murray, First Vice-Glenna Langlois, Second Vice-Thea Dodge, Secretaryâ€"Lorie Truemner and treasurer Anne Barton. The officers were duly installed for the 1985-86 year. Public relations Officer gave her report followed by correspondence which included a letter from the Cancer Society and the Federated W.I. of Ontario telling of a conference to be held in Ireland in May 1986. It was moved that a donation of $25.00 be given to the Cancer Society. Cathy Morray reported re the installation of a phone in the W.I. Hall As the W.I. is classed as a business, the rates quoted were: $91.00 for installation. with one jack provided and $17.00 per month charges. Cathy is to make further inquiries before a decision will be made. Following some discussion it was decided to begin meetings 1/2 hour earlier, i.e. 7 p.m. for lunch with meeting to begin at 7:30p.m. This will be on a trial basis until September LOOK Several members expressed interest in attending the meeting of "SADD" (Students against Drunk Driving) to be held May 14, at the United Church in Elgin. Ellen Bonwill told of an upcoming evening to discuss the Geology of Lake Opinicon Region to be held May 19 at 8 p.m. at theQueen's Biology Station. Roll Call was "Tact is the art of making a point without making an enemy". The Motto and Parks Canada Centennial saying were read after which the hostesses for the evening were thanked and the meeting adjourned. The May 2nd meeting was again held at the Lockmaster‘s House Museum. Hostesses provided an excellent lunch which was followed by an address by Annette Turner, a London Life Insurance Company Representative, who spoke on the various types of life insurance available. She spoke of their RESP plan and the advantages of certain plans over others. After a short question period Pres. Cathy Murray presented Annette with a small gift and thanked her for her presentation. Meeting opened in the usual manner with minutes 8: treasurer's report being read and accepted. A study is now underway to see if it is feasible to have a pay telephone installed as opposed to the regular phone discussed previously. Mary Warren told of the plans for annual opening of the Lockmaster's House Museum. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on June 15, at 7 pm. It was agreed that the W.I. pay for the musicians' dinner at the Opinicon and donate money towards food and beverages after the ceremonies. A request was made for Public Relations Officer Lola Timpany to send cards to members of the W.I. and family members who are ill and shutâ€"in to keep in touch with them. A letter was received from the foster child in Upper Volta indicating that the village had been able to plant a larger garden thanks to the money sent which had enabled them to install a well. A meeting was scheduled for May 15 to discuss further the possible uses of the property behind the Hall. Anne Barton & Samantha Moylan reported on the 4 day leadership skills seminar HASKINS FORD 8. Helen Burns reported on the Fish Fry which was a great success thanks to all who attended. Roll call was "Have you ever written to a manufacturer or organization with a suggestion or complaint and what were the results?" Most reported that companies usually responded with half a dozen or a case of the product in question. The meeting closed with a plant auction.
