page 14 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN PHILIPSVILLE W. I. The Philipsville Women's Institute held the 76th District Annual on May 9. Mary Warren, president called the meeting to order with the singing of "O Canada" followed by the Ode and Mary Stewart Collect. The address of welcome was given by Theresa George and reply by Kathryn Scott, next year we will be at Chaffeys Lock. Area schools participated in an essay contest with 42 essays received and the winner was Susan DOcherty from Westport. Mrs. Isabel Roberts presented her with the prize, and Susan gave her essay "Water For All". Roll Call was Chaffeys Lock (8), Delta (12), Philipsville (8). The guest speaker Provincial Board Director Mrs. Florence Knapp gave an informative talk on new rules and regulations taking place in the Institute. She wants members to get reports to send to the Home and Country. After the minute books are full each branch will have to buy their own books. She spoke of the upcoming workshops; one is a film on Love, Honour and Abused, she hoped we would get it. She also spoke about Interval Houses and the Year of the Youth. The Area Convention is at Napanee this year in October. She spoke about the board trying to get the CRCT not make the change they are trying to make, and if they do we will have to pay to phone our neighbours. She Closed with a prayer written by Frank Vorman while up in the capsule going around the world. Some of the guests were: Mae Wayte (Area Secretary), Louise Poole (Assist. to Prov. Memorial services were conducted by Mrs. Bryan and Mrs. Molony, flowers were placed in memory of Mrs. Zeita Taite, Mrs. Laura Russell and Mrs. Edna Dean at the close Kathryn Scott sang â€In the Garden", then a two minute silence was observed. A buffet lunch was served complete with a 76th Anniversary Cake. The afternoon session opened with Mrs. Sheridan and Mrs. Gifford giving a history of the district. They told of the first meeting in Lansdowne in 1911 to which they travelled by horse and buggy. Mrs Sheridan told of the meeting held in Portland and the guest was Lady Tweedsmuir wife of the Governor General at this time. She spoke of the Institutes in England and how she clipped out pieces from the newspaper and collected old pictures and put them in a book to keep ~ this is where the Tweedsmuir history book started. Guest speaker Rural Organization Specialist, Jean Riddell gave a very interesting talk on the work of the five 41-! clubs and the prizes they can win. The Elgin 4H club won in their division in Leeds and can now go to the Ottawa division. At the close of her talk,Miriam Bryan presented her with 3 books from her private collection to help with her work. Draw for the door prizes took place and the winners were Clara Hallett, Edith Myers, Eva Dougall, Mae Wayte, Leorene Hayes, Vera Sheridan and Cathie Veitch.
