Four staff members attended a Reference workshop in Ottawa conducted by OLS Rideau with guest speakers from Kingston and Nepean Public Libraries. The main thrust of the workshop was to stress the importance of obtaining the right information from patrons for requests for reference or nonâ€"fiction material. Both speakers reiterated the fact that some patrons don't know exactly what they want, or what materials are available on the various subjects they may be interested in. It is up to the librarian, with the cooperation of the patron, to clearly identify what, where and why the information or material is needed to assist in the delivery of good service. It was also noted that occasionally the patron, during the "interview" thinks the library staff is being “nosy” when all they are trying to do is to find as much information they can about the request. A multitude of reference tools were discussed, with special emphasis on those available in the small and medium size libraries. The new Canadian Encyclopedia should assist in some areas and the inevitable Guiness Book of Records has proven itself an excellent resource. Several "trivia" books have also become excellent reference tools, especially those with indexing. During the lunch break, participants were invited to tour the Ottawa Public Library and were special guests in the Reference department. RLUL staff were able to direct a couple of reference requests to the staff and observe the computer operation for search and retrieval of answers. All RLUL staff felt this was a very informative and beneficial workshop. South Crosby Council have kindly ' consented to open a door directly into the Community Room from the library. This will permit, on a booking arrangement with the Township, use of the room as well as kitchen facilities. It will also permit, during library operating hours, access for groups using the room, to the copier and library facility. ' The Board also approved, on a trial basis, the use of the library facility, (and with Council's approval, the Community Room) for the layout of the Lantern. October 29 will be a trial run in this location. The access to this room should prove to be beneficial to all users of both facilities. The Board have decided to purchase a new ’Savin copier. This machine has reduction and enlargement capabilities and also can take "card stock" (used for making tickets, etc.) The Library will now offer some services to local organizations on a cost return basis. e.g. limited number tickets, poster reproduction, membership cards, etc. For more information on this service, please contact the coâ€"ordinator during regular office hours: Mon. 8: Tues. from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tel. 359-5315. A good response has been received from the request for speakers for monthly/bi monthly programs to run in the South Crosby and Seeley's Bay branches. It is hoped to begin scheduling these early in the New Year. An increased selection of seasonal books has been purchased for the Union branches and should be on display in the month of November. Groups are reminded that film bookings for the Christmas season, (specific titles) had an October 30/85 deadline. Some titles may still be available but \bookings should be made as soon as possible. The 16mm projector is out-of-action at this time but it is hoped to have it or a replacement available early in November. The Board will meet November 28th in the Rear of Leeds and Lansdowne Township Offices at Sweets Corners. Meetings are open to the public and all are welcome to attend.
