. amt"; WV ' TWI- ‘ ' n LIBRARY CELEBRATIONS A HUGE SUCCESS. Beginning with the official opening of the new Library/Community building in Seeley's Bay, donated to the community by the Sweet family and concluding with a well attended Association of Small Public Libraries of Ontario workshop, the tenth Anniversary celebrations of the Rideau Lakes Union Library were a huge success. Participants from across the Province Jomed Eastern Ontario representatives for the three days of events. Mr. Hubert Sly, past Reeve of the Township of Rear of Leeds 8: Lansdowne and an original Board member, acted as M.C. at the official kick-off. Greeting dignitaries from the Ministry of Culture 8: Citizenship (Mrs. Grace Buller, Manager of Library Division & Bill Kenny, Library Analyst), Director of Ontario Library Service-Rideau (Mr. Larry Eshelman), first Board chairperson Mary Warren and present Board chairperson Jane Monaghan, Mr. Sly read greetings from M.P. Jennifer Cossitt and a personal commendation from Premier Frank Miller. The speakers praised the accomplishments of the Union Board and thanked the Sweet family for their generous donation to the library community. Tours of Lyndhurst, Delta and Elgin followed, with appropriate stops at libraries and historic sites in each area. The group then joined other invited guests at Hotel Kenney where the participating councils hosted a reception before close to 60 people sat down to dinner. Bob Runciman, M.P.P. Minister of Consumer 8: Corporate Relations 8: Registrar General for Ontario, 8: County Warden Carl Polite, both accompanied by their wives, addressed the gathering, bringing greetings from their respective groups as well as their personal congratulations. June 2 was a relaxing day, with guests touring the villages of Newboro, Westport and Portland eventually joining the staff of the Union Libraries for lunch at the Gallagher House in Portland. Additional sightseeing at Foley Mountain 8: Skycroft Conservation areas prior to dinner at the Opinicon Hotel concluded the day. The Association of Small Public Libraries of Ontario (ASPLO) workshop began at 10 a.m. on June 3, with 38 registrants representing 18 library boards present. Following a brief business meeting, Mrs. Grace Buller, Manager of Library Division with the Ministry addressed the group on the new Public Libraries Act recently approved. She explained how the final document became fact, through the two year review to the green paper and then legislation and regulation. An interesting question and answer period followed with many specific problems being raised. All joined for lunch at the Opinicon to reconvene for the afternoon session at 1:30 p.m. Guest speaker Karen Harrison, Chief Librarian of Township of Delhi Public Library and newly appointed chairperson of the Ontario Public Librarian's Advisory Committee, gave an excellent presentation on the art of negotiating. Many points made in her address were reiterated in a humourous film, which used everyday situations illustrating how we "negotiate" every day in our dealings with others. The pointers should assist staff negotiating with boards, boards with council and everyone in their own personal "negotiations". Throughout the three day celebration, representatives from Doubleday 8: Penguin Books were on hand, offering displays and material. The Rideau Lakes Union Library Board extends its appreciation to all those who helped make the weekend a success. Those who participated left with the assurance that "North Leeds Welcomes You Warmly" is indeed a fact!
