pig 2 WHLEEDSWTEII ° EDITORIAL PAGE- I am beginning to wish that this was not our summer edition. There are so many events which I would like to comment on...and yet I always pledge to myself to offer an up-beat column for the summer! Just to mention a few of the events which have made me (8: probably you) stop and think are: the devastating fire in Lyndhurst...its affect on not only the families involved but the community as a whole: the recent & still onâ€"going hi-jacking of American citizens.... what can one say about a situation where the narrow line becomes almost invisible: the tragic air disaster which killed so many Canadians....Man's inhumanity to man appears to know no bounds! And then, of course, closer to home, the inevitable Postal increases! But who really worries about what Mr. Warren is doing? After all, he received a mere 3,000 letters of opposition when the rates were first introduced in the Spring! Come on North Leeds...1et's write now...better late than never. If you are angry with this new round of increases for what has to be the poorest service we must use...then jot a note to Mr. Warren...and M.P. Jennifer Cossitt and let them know. You should be mad as the increases will affect the mailing of the Lantern, your personal mail, your bills (which means a little boost in prices,....and remember, the service certainly leaves a lot to be desired..... That's it for beefs...until September, Have a safe and happy summer, and rPeLmember, its people that really count! THE NORTH LEEDS LANTERN wishes to thank all those who responded to our cry for "Help" with typing chores. It was encouraging to receive so many calls so quickly. Nine willing people volunteered...and we thought nobody cared! We have been fortunate to regain the services of one of our earlier volunteers, Susan Duncan, but don't think we'll forget you...Your names are now inscribed in the book for future use....Thank you again...PL. editor N.L.L. Welcomes New Contributcx' With no fanfare, last month the Lantern added a new regular column....at that time unnamed...now "Pam in Portland". Pamela Fry, recently "escaped" from Toronto, has generously offered to add her expert writing talents to the Lantern's pages. With many years in the publishing field, and recently editor of My Own Four Walls by Diane Haskin, Pamela fell in love with our area and is now firmly relocated in the village of Portland. In her short time here, she has had some exciting and sometimes hazardous experiences, several of which will provide excellent reading for us "old country" hands. We hope our readers will enjoy this new feature...and don't be surprised if, after meeting Pamela, you don't end up in one of her articles. PLEASE NOTE! E MATERIAL WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THE SEPTEMBER LANTERN IF RECEIVED AFTER AUGUST 2|. IQBS This includes classifieds. display ads or articles. The staff of the Lantern wish everyone a safe and happy summer..... and hope to enjoy the same! WE WILL BE BACK IN SEPTEMBER NI" -’ / 5i mi ~uluiul ululuulllll i 92E- l éilium .1; 'MY OWN FOUR WALLS' by Diane Haskins The result of years of research, months of rewriting and weeks of anticipation culminated in the release of this fine volume. Whether your home is included, your family mentioned or you just love books...this beautifully compiled and designed book will make a worthy addition to any collection. From its title and dedication to the final pages on which to record your "own four walls" the content makes delightful and informative reading of times past. Handling many books, especially those of a similar nature, I can assure our readers this is one of the finest I have seen. A veritable luxury in information on the early buildings of Ontario (Bastard and South Burgess) and the families who settled and lived in the area. Told in a most readable fashion, with a multitude of pictures and photographs, both old and new, it is a book that you will want to own. Along with the architectural details, the text tells of the families, life styles and customs of those early days. All those connected with this book must be proud of their hard work. The results are indeed praiseworthy. "MY OWN FOUR WALLS“ will make a fine and unique gift, to yourself, family and friends and especially those who visit the area or wish to know more about this section of North Leeds.
