CHAMBER OF COMMERCE STARTS FOR ELGIN & DISTRICT. Dec. 5/85 Rideau District High School A cross section of business people and local residents attended a meeting with the "Committee to establish and Elgin Chamber of Commerce" This meeting was a culmination of two or three previous meetings and the gathering of information by Dick Miller and Mary Klynkramer. After welcoming the group, Constable Maureen Maveety, the O.P.P. Community Service Officer, gave an excellent presentation on business security. Const. Maveety covered various aspects of building security as well as in-store methods of preventing shop-lifting. A videoâ€"tape presentation showing a bank hold-up gave all the experience of testing their powers of observation, the best weapon of all against crime, according to Const. Maveety. Following this presentation, Mary introduced George Winters, of the Bank of Montreal, who explained some of the work done by the Athens Chamber of Commerce and indicated the type of activities a Chamber could embark upon in our area. Mary explained some of the benefits available to Chamber members. i.e. group health insurance, group advertising, co-ordinated sales events, etc. as well as organizing community events to benefit all residents of the area. A coffee and donut break, kindly provided by Cameron's Store, Elgin, permitted those in attendance to discuss various points of interest. Before closing the meeting, it was decided to formally establish a Chamber with charter memberships being offered at $10.00 per member. Box 113 Elgin, Ontario KOG 1E0 359-5959 NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS It has been another interesting month for the nursery school. The children have studied about animals, making a collage, discussing how pets need lots of love, and the difference between pets and wild animals. There were animal stories, games and even some real live visitors. Halloween was celebrated in costume with special games, films and some treats. The letter M came into study through making mice, masks and a monster. The children had their pictures taken at South Crosby School. The nursery school also had a visit from the North Leeds Ambulance and itS‘ crew. The member's meeting on Nov. 25 had Carol Shaw as a guest speaker. She explained the operation of both the toy lending library and the Day Care Registry, services for parents of young children. The report on the Toy Barn Toy Party told that as a result of sales, we were able to acquire $40. worth of new toys and games. We also did exceptionally well at the Rideau Crafts market. The large life-sized doll that Teri Loucks, pres., made and donated was won by none other than our teacher Mrs. Brown. We now have tickets ready for our major raffle of the year, the prize being a four day, three night cruise on the Canadian Empress. Members are asked to get their tickets so they can start selling them. We welcomed three new members to our Junior Class - Kristy, Carolyn and Breen. As there is no meeting in Dec., our next meeting will be Mon., Jan. 27.
