North Leeds Lantern PORTLAND A.C.W. The meeting of the Anglican Church Women was held at the home of Evelyn Swain with 16 members and 3 guests present. The president opened the meeting with prayers.Wanda and Claire conducted the devotions. Margaret Stimson was thanked for her term as pres. and all members were thanked for their coâ€"operation in the summer bake sale which was a successful operation again. Plans were completed for the October meeting when the U.C.W., Portland will be entertained. The meeting has been postponed one week and will be held on Oct. 17. The minutes of the June meeting were read, the roll called and the treasurer's report given. The business part of the meeting was closed with prayer. Nicole and Corey Avery told of their respective weeks at Camp Hyanto, a children's camp run by the Anglican Diocese of Ontario. Jane Cheong also told of the improvements made at the camp with money given from the Anglicans in Mission project. Many happy memories of camp life were recalled over the lunch. VOLUNTEERS ATTEND liâ€"H ACTIONWEAR LEADERS‘S SCHOOL Twentyâ€"six leaders from thirteen clubs in the area attended a workshop recently in preparation for leading the new Ll-H project called Actionwear. During the one day workshop they sewed samples of the special techniques for knits that they will be demonstrating to club members. The day also featured discussion groups and activities related to sewing with knit fabrics. These volunteer leaders will be organizing Ll-H clubs for young people ages 12 to 2] in their home communities. Members need to have access to a sewing machine and are expected to saw a garment during the project. Local meetings begin soon and end in November with a fashion show prepared and presented by all the clubs in the area. The Ontario Hâ€"H program has always received strong Support from the community volunteers. There are 22.000 young people involved in H-H and 5.000 volunteer |eaders...an excellent ratio. The Llâ€"H program is coordinated through the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. For more information on LI~H in your area contact the local Ministry office. ‘Iâ€"H ACTIONWEAR PROJECT FOR TEENS ll-H is a program. for youth ages 12 to 2l. that stresses learning new skills in a small group atmosphere. The project offered this fall is called Actionwear. In it. members make garments that are easy to sew. easy to fit. comfortable and fashionable. The young people who participate make one or two garments depending on their previous sewing experience. Clubs are organizing in communities throughout the County. Leadership is provided by adult volunteers who live in the community. Membership is open to young people ages 12 to 21. A calendar of events for the upcoming season had been drawn up at a planning meeting held earlier. Mrs. Jane Cheong. Co-ordinator of the V.O.N. Volunteer Visiting Program. attended the meeting and explained the new program. Her presentation was well received and she was assured of Legion support. Legion Week is being observed from Sept. l5â€"21 and will be opened with a church service at St. Columbanus Church at 10:00 a.m. During the week and as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. tulip bulbs will be planted at the Elgin and Portland Cenotaphs. Branch members purchased a total of 600 tulip bulbs as a contribution to the Diamond Jubilee. A book entitled. "The Royal Canadian Legion 1926-1985“ has been published and is now on sale. It tells the Legion's story in images and words. It recounts how the organization grew out of smell. scattered Regimental Associations and developed into a united. 600.000 member body that today reaches into 1.800 Canadian communities. A Halloweenâ€"Harvest Dinner/Dance is planned for Oct. 26th. Dinner at 7:00 p.m. Advance tickets will be on sale @ $0.00 for dinner and dance. $6.00 for dinner only and $4.00 for dance only. Only 100 dinner tickets will be available. Costume and door prizes will be awarded. The Royal Canadian Legion has raised $200,000. for the Tornado Disaster Fund. This donation. which represents the single largest contribution to the fund. will go a long way towards restoring homes and properties of victims of the tornado that hit communities in South Ontario last May.
