page 2 NORTH LEEDS LANTEM ° EDITORIAL PAGE- l‘A THANKLESS JOB' Everyday we read about the actions or inaction of our recently elected provincial politicians and our year old federally elected representatives. The perqu's and quirks, the major decisions and the minor petty arguments. Televised portions of the "Houses in action" occasionally resemble a kiddies playpen filled with tantrum bedevilled infants. And yet, at the local level, our elected officials conduct their business quietly and with little discord. Little publicity is given to the work they accomplish on our behalf. Notes from councils reported in the Lantern do not give more than the bare bones of decisions made. No mention is made of the number of hours spent by these people in gathering information, contacting various ministries and consulting various groups. The perqu's? Usually barely enough money to cover out-ofâ€"pocket expenses! Municipal politics is the first step in government and the one closest to the people. Unfortunately, municipal elections usually have the lowest voter turnâ€"out. What a shame when one thinks of the commitment the nominees are prepared to make. Low response has been put down to apathy, lack of interest or on the other side of the coin, total trust. But we all should get out and vote, especially in the municipal elections. Do you really know what your council does? Do you want to have some say or even just find out what plans future councils may have for the immediate area in which you live? Many decisions made at Queen's Park or in Ottawa do affect our life-style, but no where near as immediately as those made at the local municipal council chambers! The people who run for municipal office cannot be doing it for finanial gain or prestige, as the work involved makes it, on many occasions, one of the most thankless jobs around. Long hours, oft-times tedious meetings, rushed meals and the odd conflict with fellow citizens. Residents of North Leeds...what do you want from your councils? What are you prepared to give to support them?_ The very least you can do is VOTE! The next three years will be governed by the elected officials in November 1985. Make sure you have given the matter some time and thought. Look back on the achievements of the past and the restrictions placed by higher levels of government on the local councils. Once nominations are in, ask those running, questions which are important to you. Discuss with future candidates areas you would like to see acted upon. No-one can work in the dark and many times our councils feel that they don't hear until after the fact, information which would have had a bearing on their decision. Likewise in the election of a school Board trustee, check the record. Do you know their position on the various issues they will have to face in the next three years. (In this area, North Leeds has lost one seat representation and only two candidates are to be elected due to an increased representation from the Separate School sector) Whatever you do, be an informed voter. The opportunity to vote is a privilege at all levels of government and none affects us more directly than the local municipal government. Review the past three years and in most cases you will find that councils do work hard, receive little thanks and really do want your support. Do your share and VOTE. THE NEGATIVE 8 THE POSITIVE Isn't it sad that we tend to hear only the negative things? Like, when we do something wrong....no-one ever seems to forget But when we do things well....it is forgotten almost inmediately? Thank goodness the human mind doesn‘t seem to work that way. Most people, having had a bad experience in their past, find it hard to recall just how bad it was...the mind tends to soften the blow by permitting the event or happening to retain some good. For example, when you have experienced pain, either through surgery, accident or even the dentist...you rarely remember just how bad it was...if you did, dentists could well lose a lot of patients, even with the new almost painless techniques! We should follow nature's way and try to make room for the good things in the same ratio as we tend to mutter on about the bad! The Lantern staff are lucky in that 90% of the cements we receive are from the good category. With that ratio, we can handle the 10% negative conments fairly well.... But what about kids, fellow workers, friends, acquaintances? Do you ever give some-one a compliment? or do you first pick on the multitude of little wrongs and negate the good? The little book “The One Minute Manager" contains much advice on this topic and is being used by many management teams in business and industry....WHY ....because it works! If you have topoint out an error or fault, do it in less than a minute and give an equal amount of time to praise for work well done. It pays off....l'ry it..You'll even like yourself more!
