! 1 i i I FUNDING RECEIVED FOR 'CHILD DEVELOPMENTll SERIES Parents in six Leeds and Grenville communities will have an opportunity this winter to learn more about their young children. The Leeds and Grenville Children's Services Advisory Group (CSAG) has recently received a special grant of $600.00 from the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services. The money comes from the Ministry's Day Care funds, and is to organize and operate a series of six workshops on child development. The goal of the project is to provide information on the development of young children to the parents and individuals who look after children of preschool age. Each event will consist of a film presentation followed by a question period with various professionals on hand to address concerns. Each seminar will be planned and co'sponsored with a local group to meet the particular needs of the community. Admission and refreshments are free of charge. _ Two of the events have already been held. In November of 1985, the CSAG and the Kemptville Toy Library coâ€"sponsored "Hugs and Kids", a film about the behavioural problems most common in preschoolers. Deb McCann and Steve Morton, child care workers from Beechgrove in Brockville were on hand to answer parents' questions. In January, 1986, the CSAG and the Brockville Montessori School co-sponsored the film "Start. of a Lifetime". This excellent film outlined the developmental milestones in a child's first 15 months of life. Dixie O'Reilly and Joyce Graham from the Infant Stimulation Program at theBrockville General Hospital answered questions after the film. Both presentations in Kemptville and in Brockville were well attended by members of the, community. ‘ In March, the CSAG and the IOOO’Islands Day Care in Gananoque are co-sponsoring the third presentation. Dates and location still have to be finalized. The remaining three events have not yet been organized, YES. The group "The Party Zone" wrote the words and music for the song "If Only I Had Taken the Time" which they hope will become the theme for the SADD program, now active in all Leeds and Grenville High schools. The Students Against Driving Drunk has made great strides in increasing awareness of the problems of drinking and driving. The song has a quiet yet intense rhythm and the words are meaningful to young and old alike. While most of us tend to ignore the new generations's music, this one is worth listening to, both for its message and its music. AND. THE WINNERS ARE . . .
