WOMEN'S INSTITUTE ANNUAL MEETING The North Leeds District of the Women's Institute held their Annual Meeting in the Opinicon Hotel, Chaffey's Lock on May 15th. Roll call was answered by 7 members from Delta, 10 from Chaffey's Lock and 11 from Philipsville. President Mary Sutcliffe remarked on the different interests of the three branches but was pleased by the interaction of the three groups. A welcome was warmly extended to Area Pres. Louise Poole and to the Area Sec./Treas. May Wayte, Director of the Kingston Area, Florence Knapp brought us information regarding the proposed changes and competitions previously discussed within our groups. We were urged to write to our M.P.'s regarding the acidâ€"rain debates between the U.S. and Canada. The 60th Annual Area Convention will be held in Brockville at the Quality Innon Oct. 6 8: 7th. A beautiful memorial was conducted by Kathryn Scott in memory of the late Rose Jones of Delta. After a minute of silence was observed, Mrs. Scott concluded her remarks by presenting a velvet rose as a visible token of our remembrance; then she played and sang "The Rose" as a final tribute. Our afternoon speaker was Joan Patterson, President of the Board at Interval rsflouse in Brockville. The average occupancy is comprised of 8 to 10 women, plus children; 6 weeks is the maximum period for this shelter, no drugs or alcohol are permitted. The house is staffed by the Director, 4 full-time counsellors and 3 part-time. There is a 2.4 hr. crisis line and in the summer 'two or three students are generally employed, mainly for PR duties. The finanacing of the House is rather a mixed bag - Community and Social Services, General Welfare, Mother's Aid and Municipalities; however, of 25 or 27 municipalities only 1 1 have contracted with Interval House to cover their own citizens (a general response being "We don't have that problem" proving once again “That none are so blind as those who will not see"). The main aim is to help the women decide on their future. Some occupants return a few times trying to gain courage to make a new start in. life; quite a number are -- able to do this and their confidence increases as time passes and then they are able to encourage others who have suffered as they have done. For setting up anew, many require household items for their new living quarters. The Philipsville Branch presented Mrs. Patterson with $100. to use as needed. The District's token thank-you was a W.I. spoon. Our Resolution on parking lots for the handicapped is gradually acquiring strength as Brockville n0w fines unauthorized users $25. and Kingston $50. We who are ableâ€"bodied should scorn to take a space reserved for those who are not; stop and think, the "minute" you think you'll be parked may be "10 or 15" and right then a handicapped person may need the space. Jean Riddell, Rural Organization Specialist of the Dept. of Agriculture, spoke of the new materials available and kits can be requested from the Resource Files. Also, Jean referred to the Food Systems and Agriculture available to all Elementary Schools. This is the Elgin Community Center Committee. The main goal of this committee is to repair the Elgin Rink. As everyone knows it's in very poor shape and it needs a lot of attention to get it back into use. To do this though, the committee needs money and most of all, support from the Elgin Community. To raise money, the committee will be holding an Auction Sale on Elgin Day, July 12th starting at 9:00 a.m. Most of the items being donated to the sale are from Elgin and surrounding businesses and citizens. There will be quite a variety of things sold, but we would like to get more. So if you are cleaning your house or cottage and you find something you would like to donate, contact any of the following: Howard Smith 359-5713, Bill Glover 359â€"5143 or Dave Burt 359-5799. If you have nothing to give, then come on out to Elgin Day and our Auction Sale and give us your support there. As I mentioned earlier, the second thing we need help with is in human interest. It is hard for twelve people to make decisions for the whole community, but we have to. So if you have young kids, who like to skate or if you are one of those old timers who used to play Hockey for Elgin when outdoor rinks were everywhere, or just a concerned, interested person, then please come out to our next meeting on June 5th at 7:30 p.m. at South Crosby Township office.
