namelo .PORTLANDTâ€" PORTLAND FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS 1985/86 has seen Portland Volunteer Fire Department expand its services. The addition of a pager system jointly funded by the Township of Bastard and South Burgess and the Joint Emergency Program (JEPP), allows for a faster and larger response of personnel to emergency situations. The system allows an emergency call received over the fire phones at designated firefighters residences, to be passed on by simply hanging up, dialing another number and access code to the encoder at the fire hall, and transmitting alert tone and voice instructions to the pagers carried by the firefighters. Funding of $5,587.50 was provided by JEPP towards the purchase of this equipment. Provincial funds were also received toward the purchase of an auto extrication basic kit. The twenty-one member department has seven men trained in conjunction with South Crosby Fire Department in automobile extrication. The department has also purchased a resuscitator and with ten men trained in Basic First Aid, and eight in CPR, will be responding as a first response team to emergency situations at the request of the North Leeds Ambulance Service to assist in stabilization efforts should the ambulance be delayed or multiple injuries occur. Other activities besides regular training include a Fire Prevention Program, and Heart Program. This program is designed to alert firefighters arriving at a fire scene to the bedroom of anyone who might require special assistance in escaping. Members will be calling on every home within their response area with details on this. We request that all area residents take heed to the burning regulations, and both the Ladies Auxiliary and the Firefighters Association wish to thank everyone for their support in our fundraising efforts. The pres. Betty James opened the meeting with the member‘s prayer, the collect for Ascension Day and the Lord's Prayer. Wanda Merriman and Betty led the devotions, using the Living Message and some special readings for Mother's Day. The secretary read the minutes of the April meeting and the treasurer presented her report. The group agreed to cater for the Legion banquet to be held on June 21. Quilt blocks may be assembled for the June meeting so that quilting can begin. Hattie Brown will have the quilt set up in her home. A summer bake sale will take place on July 5th. After the evening prayer and grace, the group heard a very interesting talk on birds given by Mrs. Margaret Hendrick. Mrs. Hendrick showed specimens of nests to illustrate the intricate construction of some of them. Her slides of birds gave a "closeâ€"up" look at many species. She is especially fond of owls and was able to give imitation calls which she uses when attracting owls to come closer to her to observe them. Although she does not use a camera herself, her work in the past with a naturalist photographer has given her excellent slides; she herself has a good eye for a bird picture. On the Wednesday morning walks to observe birds, she must make an admirable guide. The ACW members were so please with her talk, they want her to come back in the late autumn to talk about the birds we see at our own feeding tables. Suzette’ Tues. tunes. Fri. 9:0) I.I. - 5:00 1)... Continuing the study of our native people, a prayer to the Great Spirit was read in unison. The offering was received and dedicated. A poem, "We Must Have Beauty" by Edna Jaques, was read. A Franciscan Prayer was lead by Sheila. Guest speaker, Mrs. Len Hands of Newboro, gave an interesting talk on her eighteen years spent working for the Anglican Church and teaching native people in Sioux Lookout, Red Lake and Kenora. Jean presented Mrs. Hands with a token of appreciation. Worship closed with a prayer poem. Pres. Betty Bond opened the business meeting with a humerous poem , "The Tates". It was decided to have a table at Rideau Crafts Christmas market. We will be catering to a dinner for Smiths Falls UCW on June 18th in our church. An invitation was accepted to Elgin UCW on June 10th when Betty and John Zwiers will speak on their work in India. The fall rally will be Sept. 24 in Elgin. Our next meeting is June 17th. Following the Mizpah Benediction a hour was enjoyed. social For the finest TV ‘ l l ‘1 l l l 1 ‘ i ANTENNAS: \ i 1 Channel Master is the \s*\ . ii' undisputed world i - champion of i antenna {In engineering.
