The loving friendship between Simone de Beauvoir and the French writer and philosopher, Jean-Paul Sartre lasted for over half a century and ended with Sartre‘s death in 1980. She devotes this book 'wholely and entirely' to him. It is a frank and very personal account of the last years of his life and of his death. It also consists of long conversations between them, that were taped at the onset of his blindness, in which he expresses himself freely on his family, friends, religion and politics etc. A strange, yet poignant book dedicated to 'those who loved, who do love and who will love Sartre'. P.S. now she has died, April '86. JR The House of Getty by Russell Miller. Mr. J. Paul Getty's most abiding interest was the oil business. He knew every well, what it cost to drill and what it produced. He took over his father's business in the thirties and built it into a huge conglomerate. In 1957 Fortune magazine declared him to be the richest man in America. As Arab oil prices rose, so did the Getty billions and J. Paul owned and managed it all. His private life was less successful. His five marriages failed, his five sons disappointed him and he scarcely knew his grandchildren. He was frugal with them all and his refusal to pay a ransom for his kidnapped grandson was much publicised. His last twenty years were spent in England, in a Tudor mansion, where various lady friends tended to his needs. He failed to found an oil dynasty as he had hoped and within eight years of his death Getty Oil was bought out by Texaco. He left his family of some twenty children and grandchildren an income, to divide between them, of $one million per d_ay. Russell Miller, author of Bunny, the real story of Playboy, breaks the silence on the House of Getty. JR In the Eye of the Storm The Memoirs of Kurt Waldheim. Kurt Waldheim's memoirs are essentially about his years as Secretary General of the United Nations, 1972~82. Just one short chapter on his early years and the war.
