DELTA U.C.W. On March 12th, nine members and l visitor gathered at the Sunday School Rooms for their meeting. Pres. Irma Chant welcomed all and read a poem. Edith Woods lead the devotional. Roll call resulted in 9 home visits. The secretary treasurer's reports were read and accepted. Correspondance received was from Canadian Cancer Society re Daffodils and Special bulletin, Touchstone Heritage. Irene Goodsell held our interest while she gave a reading on "Stewardship is Something to Sing About" stating that everyone around us, including ourselves, are precious in God's sight. Edith Woods then Spoke on the Education of Indians, listing the good and bad qualities of their system. Some Indians had an inferiority complex, thinking no one cared and that they quit school. English Language was prominent in most places, but the teachers only had a limited source of information from which to work with. In their small communities, it was noted that if one had problems such as sickness, jobs to be done, all seemed to pitch in and help. Edith then closed the worship service and the benediction was pronounced. Lunch was then enjoyed by all. The next meeting will be held in the Church on April lst at 8:00 p.m. with a guest speaker. All are welcome. DELTA SENIORS Members of the Beverley Senior Citizens Club gave substantial manifestation of support for the newly organized "Meals on Wheels" program in their town. Attendance was encouraging for the organizers, despite the poor weather and treacherous walking conditions. Sincere gratitude is extended to the drivers, convenors, and other volunteer workers committed to this endeavor. Mrs. Peter Breedyk is the convenor for March. Winners of the 50/50 raffle were Mrs. W. Howard and Peter Breedyk. There will be a winner each meal day. The next meal is scheduled for March let. DELTA WJ. Our March 18th meeting was brightened by the balmy weather, the members' "wearingâ€"of-the-green" and Gwen Derouin's spacious home. Two poems which were indeed "food for thought" were read by the president. The roll call response to "An old-fashioned remedy" was informative and hilarious with many memories of home-doctoring - all tried and true. Shirley deserved a prize for her modern remedy for storing plastic bags: fold double vertically, roll, and place in an empty Kleenex box â€" you'll be amazed at the number you can store this way, very neatly too! It was agreed that we would increase our donations to our Sunshine Bags instead of holding a Bake Sale. The District W.I. meeting is to be held March 25th in Elgin; Nellie French, Florence Molony, Isabel Robert and Shirley Wilson will attend. A Nuclear Awareness Meeting will be held in Perth at the Lions‘ Hall on April 10th. There will be two guest speakers from Environment Canada. Registration fee is $2. Bring a bag lunch; coffee or tea supplied. The nominating Committee were appointed to present a slate of officers at the April meeting. The Program was presented by Shirley Wilson, the Convener for Family and Consumer's Affairs. In assorted ways, Shirley offered food guidance and gave each member a few pamphlets to reinforce the message. Also, as a leader of 4â€"H, Shirley invited W.I. members to attend this evening's last meeting of 4-H until autumn. All ladies are warmly invited to attend our meetings. BURGESS LACAC NEWS The LACAC (Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee) has started 1986 with a variety of programs designed to enhance awareness of the architectural history in the township. The '86 members of this active committee are Jim Barker, Doug Bond, Anna Greenhorn, Heather Gunnewiek, Diane Haskins, David Mess, Marjorie Montgomery, Tom Sled, Myrla Saunders, and Irene Woods. Doug Bond will be serving as chairman and Marjorie Montgomery as secretary. Following the impetus given to the study of local history by the publication of "My Own Four Walls" in 1985, the decision was made to fund several prizes for original research in this field by students at Rideau District High School. These will be awarded to those individuals who have contributed the most of the personal research and interview program conducted during the '85â€"86 school year under the guidance of the Social Studies program. A request will be made to the township council to designate as heritage buildings the Delta United Church and the Omer Brown House, Delta. Originally built by the trustees of the New Methodist Church in 1888 to provide larger accomodation for their expanding congregation, the church in 1925 became part of the United Church of Canada. The 1905 Omer Brown House now owned by Mr. 8: Mrs. W. Winegarden is one of the numerous imposing homes in Delta and includes many interesting architectural features. It is a pleasure to make this request with the knowledge that future generations will be able to enjoy the exterior beauty of these buildings as we of the present do. The designation of buildings within the township has been most successful with the following properties already designated and therby preserved for posterity: Delta Anglican Church, Dan Davison House, Delta (Mr. W. Leader); Walter Denaut House, Delta (Ms G. Derouin); Philo Hicock House, Delta (Dr. R. Dent); Philipsville Baptist Church; Isaac Whaley House, Philipsville (Mrs. A. Greenhorn); John Green House, Harlem (Mr 8: Mrs L. Fry); St. Peter's Anlican Church, Newboyne; St. Peter's Anglican Church Vault, Newboyne; Emmanuel Anglican Church, Portland; Harmon S. Toffey House, Portland; Thomas Graham Frame House, Portland (Mr 8: Mrs. Schmid) and Horace Sheldon House, Portland. The LACAC is continuing to process designated property grants. Up to $2000. a year, on a matching basis, is available to owners of designated properties from the Province of Ontario for exterior restoration work. If interested in this program, further information is available through the township office in Chantry or from individual LACAC members. Sources for plaques, which will be erected to indicate that the building is a designated property and including the name and date in which the building was erected, is currently being investigated. The cost of these plaques will be shared equally between the property owner and LACAC. It is hoped that some of these will be in place during 1986. The LACAC will also continue to present its popular slide program. If any organization is interested in this, please contact the township office.
