page 2 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN ' EDITORIAL PAGE- The summer of '86 will be remembered for Expo, the Commonwealth Games, and the various other events which took place both at home and abroad......But the summer of '86 will stay in our minds for its.....weather! Rain, rain and more rain seemed to be the constant cry of the weatherman. It has been said "Don't knock the weather, without it, how would we start conversations?" I would presume that conversation was, like the rain, excessive these past two months. While we realize the extent of the weather‘s effect on farmers, who oftâ€"times are hoping for rain just when we want it to be fine, even they had "had enough". Many crops were either damaged through lack of sun or by too much of the wet stuff. Hundreds had vacations with the Englishman's companion....the umbrella! Most fishermen were undaunted...at least for the first 45 minutes of any of the rain "showers". However, observers did indicate a slight rush for shore when the downpours filled the boats faster than the bailers could work! Few local events escaped...Those with three day events managed to have one fine day for operation, but pity those with a one day show. One has to admire the perseverance of the many tourists and local residents who supported scheduled events. Garbage bags, make-shift raincoats for many, would suddenly appear making 4 customers and patrons resemble a massive green and yellow moving RIDEAU DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL blob! But they came...and they stayed, helping local organizers at least break even. For the first time in seventeen years, the male resident of the house, decided, without pressure, that cottage life in the "damp" leaves a lot to be desired! Returning to the village always signifies the end of our summer holidays...and by the middle of the first week of August, we had all "had enough!" As we complained, (almost constantly), we were given all the optimist's views on this strange summer weather....from the cyclical nature of Mother Nature to the humourous quotes from years gone by e.g. Mark Twain said "It is best to read the weather forecasts before we pray for rain". This next quote was very popular in England: "It never rains but it pours, especially on someone without an umbrella". And this last one was certainly on the mark this year: "Primitive Indians used to do a snake dance for rain; civilized man just starts out on a picnic". My "fowl" weather friends tell me the ducks and fish were very happy this year..... Everyone keeps saying September "will be glorious"....here's hoping! Damply yours P.L.
