6 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN i_ ELGIN Mrâ€" ELGIN UCW The October UCW meeting was a most interesting time. Marjorie's group led the opening service. The theme was based on the wonder of God our Creator. Ray Battams showed slides which made us aware of the wonders of God's creation. We were privileged to have as our guest speaker, Leonard Judge, who gave a very interesting talk on the education of Canadain Native children. He told us that in 1972 some Native leaders wrote a document concerning education for the 70‘s and 80‘s. Their children needed to learn traditional skills taught by Native teachers as well as western education. They also wrote that it was important for Native languages to be preserved by being taught in the schools. The Indian Affairs Ministry has adopted these suggestions and many Native students are now graduating from High School and some are going on to College and University, to come back to their people in order to raise the self-esteem of their people. After the talk, Mr. Judge showed slides of the Algonquin children in their schools. He answered questions about his work for about thirty minutes. The UCW was then given the business report after which the evening was closed with refreshments. ELGIN C.W.L. The October meeting was held in O'Neill hall with a guest priest Father Cluetterbuck celebrating Mass. Meeting opened with Father Shea leading the C W L prayer and prayer for priests. This was a special Mother and Daughter or friend meeting with each member introducing her guest. The minutes were read and approved. We were reminded of the executive meeting on Oct. 19 as well as our first Euchre the same night. A joint meeting will be held in Seeley's Bay on Nov. 9th. We were highly commended on our great attendance at the Regional Meeting in Westport. The remainder of the evening was in the form of fun and games 'providing a very jovial time enjoyed by all.
