NORTH LEEDS LANTERN INTERLIBRARY LOAN GOES 'ON-LINE' On Sept. 22 Interlibrary Loan through Rideau Lakes Union Library went "onâ€"line" meaning we now send patron's requests via a computer link-up. The Union system is "hooked" into a network of libraries, first in a loop with 5 others located in the south eastern portion of the region and then has access to Z other loops (also with 5 libraries involved). The new system was initiated by the Library Division of the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture. Its aim is to provide faster and more efficient service to all area residents and also to allow for smaller libraries to lend material instead of only borrowing. While initially the new procedure is time consuming for staff, it offers the patron access to more direct service. The Board would like to advise patrons that while their branch librarian may appear to be conducting a "third degree" interogation, detailed information is necessary, even more so than before, to send requests via this new system. As all ILL requests are sent. to the Elgin office, the opportunity of the office staff to ask additional questions is not feasible thus the branch librarian is responsible for gathering "the facts". We ask our borrowers coâ€"operation in this area of service. If we have all the information, your request can be filled quickly and efficiently. If only partial information is given, then the request will be delayed while such information is found. Your librarian isn't being "nosey“...she/he's just trying to assure you of the fastest service possible. The new system also gives us access to UTLAS (a large data base located in Toronto) which carries the collections of the province's largest libraries. This will be invaluable to those who are looking for specific titles or material related to research. Please remember, ILL is a service which is offered Canada wide. Many of our titles will come from libraries across the province or the country. For this reason we ask all patrons to make sure a) they want the material they request and bi that material borrowed is returned on time.
