10 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN LEGION BEGINS NEW SEASON Rideau Lakes Branch No 231 has prepared a calendar of events for the 1986â€"87 season. It should be another busy year. Our branch hosted the Zone Gâ€"Z council meeting and pOppy seminar on Aug 16th, at which there was a good turnout. The first regular meeting of the year was held on Sept 4th. Legion Week in Ontario is being observed from Sept 21~Z7. The Ladies Auxiliary opened the event with a "no frills" supper on Sept 20. Some 60 people enjoyed the fine meal. The Premier of Ontario, The Hon. David Peterson, in his message of congratulations, expresses his thoughts thus, "As you mark Legion Week on this occasion, I express my gratitude for your humanitarian service and salute you for your contribution to our quality of life. It is my sincere hope that the Royal Canadian Legion will long be a positive force in communities throughout our Province". Our annual church service was held at Emmanuel Anglican Church, Portland on Sept 14th. Rev. Paul Kompass extended a cordial Welcome and conducted a fine service. Our thanks and appreciation to Rev. Kompass and the congregation for accepting us. The annual literary competition in the local schools, is now under way. It is held in conjunction with Remembrance Day and is to be completed by the end of November. A Harvest Dinner/Dance will be held on Oct. 25th. YOUR COUNCIL AT WORK BASTARD 8: BURGESS (S) Despite the many rumours flying around, Delta is n_ot getting a water tower or a filtration plant! Sorryll What you see is the Gulf Oil water purification field. By the time the water enters Delta Mill Creek it will be clear of all contaminents as well as iron. This area is blessed with an over abundance of iron in the water. We understand iron entering the water from such a source and in such quantity would be fatal to the fish in the lake. Unfortunately the County has not as yet overcome all the problems posed by the Veterinarys' Association. Therefore, no further news on a rabies clinic. We are delighted to report that, despite the weather Lower Beverley Lake Township Park had another successful season, even increasing its revenue over the previous one. Tenders are now out for the new comfort station. Your Council attended a meeting with the Fire Departments, a representative of the O.P.P. and of the Ambulance Services. At this meeting considerable progress was made toward an eventual Emergency Measures Plan. One more meeting should complete this project. The Family Physicians Committee continues to meet with doctors who may be interested in locating in Portland. After discussion with Dr. Hammett, Ministry of Health, Underserviced Area Branch, representatives from the committee plan to attend at least two recruitment sessions. These will be in Ottawa and Kingston. Wish us well! An elegant ceremony took place at the Delta Mill. Members of the Council, L.A.C.A.C., and Mill Society were in attendance to see plaques presented for the designated buildings in the RIDEAU DISTRICT DIABETESâ€"ASSOCTATION Dr. George Merry was gueSt speaker at the September meeting of the Rideau District Diabetes Association. He gave a most interescing talk on fdot care. He demonStrated different types of shoes and utensils for taking care of the feet. A question and answer period was also very informative. Doug Bond, L.A.C.A.C. chairman presided and Arch Ostrom, reeve, ma de the presentations.
