SOUTH CROSBY TOWNSHIP On November 23rd, our Clerk attended a seminar on Crime Prevention in Brockville. The theme of the seminar was Child Abuse. The group was addressed by several very knowledgeable people in various appropriate fields. These people included Dr. William Marshall, Department of Psychology, Queen's University, United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Crown Attorney, Mr. J.L.K. Vamplew and Sgt. Joe Beaubien of Ontario Provincial Police. Solicitor General made 61 Crime Prevention award presentations, one of which was to the Township of South Crosby for organizing and implementing 'the Neighbourhood Watch Program. The award for South Crosby was accepted by Myrna Baxter. This placque has been hung in Council Chambers at the Municipal Office. Ken Keyes MUFFLERS BRAKES SHOCKS ELGIN‘ W.I.â€"â€" RED CROSS HOMEMAKERS The Volunteer Committee of the North Leeds Unit of the Red Cross Homemakers met on Nov. 10th at 1 p.m. in the Elgin office. Chairman called the meeting to order. The minutes of the last meeting were unavailable. Several pieces of correspondance were circulated and discussed including minutes of the Board of Management meeting, upcoming Fundraising workshop and new appointments at Division. Marilyn Moore advised the committee that due to increased hours of service, which have doubled, a person will be hired to work 14 hours weekly in the Elgin Office. Approval was unanimous that Ken Stewart's dedication to his work as Gananoque Loan Cupboard chairman, be acknowledged. Invitations to the Homemaker's Annual Christmas dinner at RDHS Nov. 25th were presented to committee members. Tickets will be sold on a Stereo record player with speakers donated by the Canadian Tire Store in Gananoque, proceeds to help defray the cost of the Homemaker's Christmas dinner. The draw will take place on Nov. 25th at RDHS. As of July 86, our Assistant Supervisor of Homemakers is on permanent staff. The committee will again in January. meet NOTICE . Sandra Freeman's group gave the worship with readings by each member of the group on the theme Remembrance Day. Offerings were taken and dedicated. The study, with Irene's group, proved to be a very interesting subject and was a continuation of "The Native People" of various countries. Film slides were shown illustrating how these people had been abused by the white invader, who robbed them of their lands which were their heritage, the land being used for such things as mining, oil production and hydro. The people included Canadian Indians, Australian Aborigines and the natives of the Phillipines, Honduras and Nicaragua. The question being what can be done to help them. The United Church ah'eady gives moral and financial assistance wherever possible. This subject will be resumed in later meetings. Tonight's meeting ended with the reading of the Aboriginal "Charter of Rights". In the business section, Sandra read the minutes of the last meeting and Enid the Financial Report. Once again the Christmas Bazaar was a huge success, making a profit of $2,060.84. It was voted to give $2500. to the Mission and Service Fund, bringing the amount donated in 1986 to $4,000. Various other charity proposals were made and approved. It was decided that gifts for our secret pal and the food bank would be brought to the December meeting, the total cost of which should not exceed $5.00. Loree closed the meeting with prayer after which a happy social hour was enjoyed by all.
