30 NORTH LEEDS [ANTERN RIDEAU NOTES Over 100 Rideau students, together with the cheerleaders and 20 students from the visiting TISS senior girls' basketball team, cheered wheelchair athlete Rick Hansen into Elgin. Student Council President, Pam McCullough, presented Mr. Hansen with a cheque for $300. raised by the students and staff at the School. Rick signed a get well card for student council social convenor, Troy Halladay, who is recovering in hospital from injuries received in a car accident. We wish Troy, and student James Gard, who was also hurt, speedy recoveries. Seniors Chris Lemcke and Barb Kleinâ€"Gunnewiek, and juniors, Darryl Reed and Cheryl Angenent, came away with prize turkeys after the Thanksgiving Basketball "Turkey" Shoot. This intramural competition was made possible by the kind generosity of Fresh Mart in Delta, the Portland Grocery in Portland, McCreary and Sons in Westport. "They played well, and they deserve to be champions," said soccer coach and Rideau biology teacher, Bob Chittick proudly. He was talking about Rideau's Junior Girls' soccer team, who won the LGSSA (Leeds and Grenville Secondary School Athletic Association) Championship. The team is made up of Rachel Arcand, Sonia Bentley, Lori Burt, Kathleen Carroll, Sheri Cowan, Geraldine Gray, Tricia Hickey, Leigh Kenney, Karen Laming, Sissy Laming, Lisa MacDougall, Mary Skoryna, Sandra Veley, Tanya Watson, Kelly Wing, Jill Woods and Manager Darin Tedford. There was a meeting of the RDHS Committee Executive last Thursday. Mrs. Sagriff reported on her attendance at the County School Committee meeting, held recently in Brockville, at which Director of Education, Wayne Tompkins, outlined the structure of the Board. The Rideau Committee is planning a parents and students information night in late February on a theme of the stresses and problems of early adolescents, including matters relating to drugs and alcohol. Tuesday, Remembrance Day, was marked in the school by a message from Vice-Principal, Tony Darby. In his talk with the students be listed names from the monuments in each community. “I wanted to make the numbers mean something for our students,‘I explained Darby. The Rideau senior girls' team, who lost only one game during regular season play, begin their playoffs Thursday at home against Gananoque. The junior girls' team play Athens, in Athens. Last year the Seniors won the LGSSA Championship in a thrilling final against Athens. 46 English students accompanied by Department Head Elaine Laxton went to the Brockville Civic Auditorium to see a matinee performance of MacBeth. The production was staged by the Young Stratford players and received mixed reviews from the students. The Rideau band and choir, some 69 students, enjoyed The Immigrants' Song at the school. Performed by the Tapestry Music Theatre in Toronto, The lmmigrants' Song tells the fascinating story of Canada's early history, through music, song and stories of the past. Earlier in October the Rideau Choir attended a workshop at Queen's University, Kingston, given by Brian Jackson, conductor of the Kingston Symphony, and director of the Pro Arte Singers and the Kingston Choral Society. Jill Wood and Chris Lemcke, together with Pam McCollogh, and seniors Vicky Tinkess, Jennifer Carbino and John Cooper reported to the assembly on the leadership camps they had attended this summer. Vicky Tinkess attended a 10 day course at the Ontario Student Leadership Centre in Longford Mills. The Rideau fund raising drive ended Tuesday. For two weeks students have been taking orders from The Quality ‘ Gift Shop catalogue. The funds raised will help pay for athletic tournament fees and transportation, school dances, andother student council projects.
