16 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN N.F.U. Declares November 14 as Farm Union Day November 14 was declared as "National Farmers Union Day“ by members of the Union. It was a day when NFU members celebrated 17 years of past accomplishments which have served to maintain the family farm as the cornerstone of agricultural production in Canada. Members celebrated many accomplishments on Nov. 14, NFU Day. Most noteable among these accomplishments is that members have forged an organization which involved farmers of every commodity produced in Canada. Through the Union, farmers are able to develop policies which benefit all sectors of the agricultural community and every type of production unit. Members celebrated the fact that the Union has a solid track record in forecasting economic trends and the effect of government programs. For example, NFU drew attention to the impending financial crisis in agriculture, when in April of 1980, 500 members converged on Ottawa to encourage the government to take action to head off the impending farm crisis. NFU members warned their fellow farmers that along with the demise of the Crow rate would go branchlines, and would see the introduction of variable freight rates. These "variable rates" would only serve to discriminate against farmers who are at long distances from mainline and terminal elevators. The Union was successful in heading off the first attempt to establish these rates when the Canadian Transport Commission denied the CN application to extend reduced rates to Northern Sales and Cargill Grain on weekend loadings. There have been numerous other successes; for example, the moratorium on Farm Credit Corporation loans is a direct response to the Union's insistence since 1980 that the government adopt a farm debt moratorium program. The NFU continues to pressure for a National Potato Marketing Agency with authority to set prices and manage supply. Such a marketing agency means that potato producers will not have to continue to go to government for financial aid, as is the case under the present marketing structures. While we fight to implement orderly marketing for potato producers, the National Farmers Union continues to support the national supply management program for dairy producers. Consumers must be informed that the present system provides a constant supply of high quality product with no price manipulation.
