6 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN KIN ELGIN COMMUNITY CENTRE Good weather conditions plus the efforts of four young Elgin residents resulted in an excellent outdoor skating area for village residents and South Crosby School students. The Elgin Community Centre thanks Tim Connell, Scott Patterson, Michael Shanks and Tracey Smith for creating a good base and maintaining the skating surface in time for Sno or No, the Winter Carnival, and the month of February. Work had been done in the Fall of 1986 on the rink boards and ground surface as part of a Makeâ€"Work program in the township. Materials were made available in late Fall for a new rink house to be built in the spring with volunteer labour of Elgin and area residents. Donations of $200. and $100. have been made recently for improvements to the rink area. On behalf of the community we say thank you to the donors. The winter carnival, Sno or No, brought out residents and visitors to a variety of both indoor and outdoor activities such as: races, hockey, costume judging, outdoor curling, broomball, log sawing, free skating, cross country skiing, pancake breakfast, euchre and Bowlerama. Special thanks to Elgin Lions, Elgin Lioness, Chamber of Commerce, South Crosby Fire Department, Elgin Bowling Lanes and Elgin Senior Citizens. Thanks also to donors of prizes to the Bowlerama: Summers Fuels, Home Video Shop, Community Centre Committee, Leeds Transit, Suzette's Hair Stylist, O'Hearn's Shell, Emmons Lumber, Gordanier Hardware and the Village Shop. As well as ice surface in winter the rink area is used by a very active horseshoe club in spring and summer. The Elgin Community Centre committee includes chairman Howard Smith, secretary Bill Glover, Township Council rep Don Warren and members Susan Duncan, John Goring and Barb Purdy. Concerns, suggestions or offers of help may be made to any member or in person at the regular meeting, the first Thursday of each month.
