DELTA U.C.W. President Irma Chant and eight members attended their U.C.W. meeting, which was held at the Manse with Joen Stewart being the hostess. After welcoming all, Irma read a poem on Love. Betty Henderson led in the singing of "What a Friend We Have In Jesus", followed by the reading of Romans 12:1,3,10. "I‘ve Tried to Make Love and Friendship" was read by Betty, and she then closed with a prayer. Collection was received and dedicated. The Purpose was then repeated. Minutes of the last meeting, treasurer's report and a Stewardship quotation were given. After business was completed the program based on the theme of Love was given. The world's great need is for love and friendship. This is what Jesus taught as He went into the homes of friends loving them and helping them. He loved the sinner while hating sin and showed them how to overcome it. So we are in search of the good in everyone.: The roll call was answered with 14 hospital and 11 home visits. The meeting then closed and the members and one visitor enjoyed the lunch put on by Joen Stewart. "If only others in our community could be made aware of the many individual human struggles waged against the disease and the progress being made against it, as we were at the conference, our campaign for funds would be so easy," Marlene added. Father Sean O'Sullivan who, at twenty years of age was the youngest M.P. elected to the House of Commons, was the key note speaker on Friday. Father O'Sullivan poignantly outlined his struggles against leukemia. Later in the evening, 1986 Ontario Campaign Chairman, Ed Zienkiewich, and 1987 Campaign Chairman Lin Pratt coâ€"chaired an inspirational program highlighted by the audio-visual presentation "Never Give Up On A Dream". Those in attendance were very moved by the preSentation and many reflected on it during informal gatherings at the hospitality suite later in the evening. Wood Gundy sponsored the hospitality suite. Saturday was spent at various workshops and other sessions. The first session was a "medical update" given by a number of cancer researchers. Dr. Wendy Shelly, from nearby Queen's University, was one of the panel members. She outlined the research that is being done at Queen's to determine whether or not new treatment techniques are any better than current treatment techniques. Dr. Brian Wilson, who is associated with the Hamilton Regional CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY The Ontario Division of the Canadian Cancer Society held its annual campaign conference at the Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel on Friday evening and Saturday, January 23 and 24, 1987. Finally, Dr. Jim Till, University of Toronto, discussed his current research concerned with finding ways to help patients participate in decisions about their own care. All panel members stressed that progress IS being made in the fight against the disease. The rest of the conference was primarily concerned with organizing special events designed to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society and its three-pronged approach to the disease - research, service to patients and education. The conference concluded with a Saturday evening banquet with the Honourable Murray Elston, Minister of Health, being the guest speaker. "$18.2 million is the Ontario Division Goal for 1987 so if we're to do our part, we're going to have to raise $15,000 in the Rideau Branch," said Marlene and Ron. "The community has responded so well in the past that we‘re confident we'll raise this amount this year. Our captains and canvassers have been so dedicated and people in the community have been very generous." On Tuesday, March 3 (at 8:00 p.m.) the Rideau Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society will be holding a meeting at Rideau District High School in Elgin.
