22 RIDEAU LAKES UNION LIBRARY NEWS After the major moves of the past few months, regular routine has returned to most branches of the Union. New shelving has been added to the Lyndhurst and Seeley's Bay branches to make way for the additional books arriving almost every other week. The Board has been fortunate in having the volunteer services of Ms. Susan Keates in the office. Susan has been typing and processing many of the "standard stock" books which have accumulated over the past year. With the additional volunteer assistance of Mrs. Brys Scovil, who does the final preparation of books for shelving, the I'stock" shelves are almost empty... with the titles being distributed throughout Interlibrary Loan continues to serve our public with extra-ordinary speed and continues to act as a support to our growing collection. The increase in use of Large Print material has been high and the Board will be investigating methods to increase the selection for users of these items. NEW...NEW...NEW.. The Board has several new ventures planned for the 1987 year. AFilm and Discussion Night will be held at the Elgin Branch. Plans are being finalized and full details can be found in this month's Lantern. The program will address issues relating to Women, Parenting, etc. with the latest films from N.F.B. used as a focus for discussion. ASho'w Series- the Board will be presenting over 13 shows in the area, from May 1987- Feb. 1988. Ranging from Spanish Dance to a Halifax Theatre Group, the family oriented shows hopefully will provide the opportunity for area residents to see some of the top Canadian professional shows...without the long drive usually associated with "going to the theatre". In additon to some 6 shows for family entertainment, the Board will be sponsoring several Children's Productions in the schools, at special event days and at summer Day camp programmes. Extras will include a visit by Geneologist Angus Baxter, author of several books on the topic. Also in the line-up are presentations and demonstrations by members of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Hamilton, on the art of making Christmas decorations for the home. Final dates have not been confirmed and venues are still being investigated but the complete listing should be available for the next issue of the Lantern. If you would like to hear more about this exciting new venture, please contact P. Little, Monday or Tuesday at 359-5315. The Board will have a small committee working on these programs and will hopefully involve interested area residents once plans are finalized. If you are interested in "theatre" and would like to help this new first-time venture become an on-going one, please contact either P. Little or Brys Scovil 272-2570. ********** the U nion branches.
