The Canadian Cancer Society recently received formal approval for use of their Educational Kits within the jurisdiction of Leeds and Grenville schools. The kits, complete with handâ€"outs and support material, offer teachers the Opportunity of introducing positive and healthy lifestyles to children from Kindergarten to High School level. A strong emphasis is placed on raising the awareness of young people to the hazards inherent in smoking, especially in the kits aimed at the Public School student. The kits also include material suitable for introducing students to the anatomical and physiological functions of the heart and lungs. They also stress the need for good nutrition throughout life, assisting children in realizing the affects of lifestyle on health. It is hoped that the classroom teacher will accomododate items in the kits into their teaching programmes. The Rideau Branch of the Society extends its thanks to 'the Director of Education, Wayne Tompkins, Superintendents and Resource Staff of the Board, for their perusal and approval of the kits. Farrell Consider the following: prompted by the ticking of the biological clock, a career-oriented couple plans to start a family. After long discussion in consultation with a physician, they decide that they wish their firstâ€"born to be male. Here may begin a very specific and expensive process. The couple's preference for a male will involve regular testing of the prospective father's sperm for the maleâ€"producing chromosome, the artificial insemination of the prospective mother and, hopefully, a successful impregnation. If your reaction to this scenario is disbelief, think again. Right now this method is available in the United States. The method's inventor, Ronald Ericsson of South Alzda, Wyoming, has franchised the method to more than fifty physicians through his company, Gametrics. Moreover, there are interested physicians in Canada, as well as numerous Canadian couples who have travelled to the States to ensure the conception of the preferred-sex child male grfemale. PORTLAND, ONTARIO KOG 1V0 #2 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN As expected, such a sex-specific approach to childbearing elicits mixed reactions from physicians and public. There is grave concern about its ethical soundness. For instance, what happens if a couple learns that they will bear a female child rather than the expected male, or vice versa’? Will the couple decide to abort and try again? Again, if you think abortion as a response to such disappointment is fantasy, consider the following: in other countries, specifically India and South Korea, abortion of female foetuses has increased alarmingly. Specifically in the urban areas, amniocentesis (a Chromosomal analysis of the mother's amniotic fluid) is an affordable and available test. It is interesting to note that testing centres are situated Close to abortion Clinics. Here abortions are carried out for the nominal fee of $10 to $12. Should a woman, married or unmarried, decide to abort, she is legally entitled to do so, without question or counsel. One Bombay clinic performed 16,000 abortions in 1984/85 following amniocentesis. Consider this statistic In a society that has historically and socially undervalued female offspring. A similar sexâ€"specific abortion pattern is emerging in South Korea. But to return to homeground, is this a likely future scenario here? The question is still open. There are, however, influential organizations such as the World Health Organization which are closely monitoring the impact of these new birth technologies. It has been strongly suggested that scanning and amniocentesis not be used indiscriminately, but only in cases where there is a specific medical need. As one Halifax doctor suggested, perhaps rather than condemn prospective parents for sex preference, we should get to the root of why they prefer one sex over another. The ethical ramifications of this trend should cause the reader to question sex bias beyond this situation. HAM SUPPER SEELEY’S BAY UNITED CHURCH NED. MARCH 11/87 5 ~ 7:30 P.M.
