Neill Ritchie of Ritchie Feed & Seed presented good basic information on lawn and garden care as well as upâ€"toâ€"date regulations and restrictions on the use of chemicals. He relieved the minds of local gardeners who have to rely on well-water by emphasizing that lawns should Egg be watered in hot dry weather. This draws the deep roots up closer to the surface where they have less chance of survival. It is better to raise the mower blade and allow the longer grass to shade the root system. The President, Karen Earl opened the meeting by introducing the new Executive. The Treasurer, Wendy Briggs-Jude presented the 1989 Financial Statement. Due to rising operating costs, it was decided to raise the annual membership fee from $2.00 to $3.00. BUILDERS COMPLETE BUILDING The Youth Program is well underway. The schools have been contacted and the seeds have been ordered. Public Plantings in Forfar, Elgin, Westport and Portland will be organized by Evelyn Swain, Merwin Mills, George and Elaine Carlisle. Elsie Lynch outlined arrangements for the 1990 Flower & Vegetable Show. Brochures listing rules, regulations and categories of entries were made available. Volunteers are needed to help with various aspects of the Show. SERVICE Fully Licenced - You might like to mark your calendar for May 26-27 when Upper Canada Village will be getting rid of excess plants. Perhaps you will be able to get an interesting "conversation piece" for your garden. But, before that date, the next meeting of the Rideau Lakes Horticultural Society will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 7:45 p.m. in Forfar Community Hall. It will be the Spring Plant Swap-~always lots of fun and a great way to introduce new varieties into your garden.
