YOUR COUNCIL AT WORK â€" P. TaCkaberry & A. Greenhorn’ Once again your Council had a Saturday afternoon meeting in the wide open spaces. This time the day was gorgeous, a lovely day for a walk in the woods along the waterfront. Letters have been received from ratepayers on recycling. Council has been involved by recycling metal at our dumps â€" the only material for which we have a market at this time. We are also involved in the county wide study. A pat on the back to the Conservation Conmittee which as been very active. They are now entering their third year of the Bluebrid Trials Project. The Cedar Valley Road usage of houses grew from three to twelve in 1988. Sixty houses were installed on the Delta Road with the enthusiastic participation of Grade 5 & 6 Beverley Elementary students. Three or four houses were used, which is considered an excellent first year. Plans for 1989 are to install 65 new houses on Big Rideau Lake Road, hopefully by Rideau Centennial students. These houses are supplies free of charge by Trevor Green. This active Committee is also planning a pilot roadside tree and shrub planting programme. Sixteen ornamental shruls and a small number of red pine and white ash would be planted and maintained by volunteer workers. This will provide impoved habitat for birds and perhaps some animals. We hope this is a success. We would like to see the improved appearance of the roadsides. A good deal of progress has been made on Beverley lake Township Park Nature Trail. with volunteer help a number of trees and shrubs have been identified for labelling. WOOd has been donated for the identification signs and these are to be prepared by Park Superintendent Bud Donald, hopefully for spring installation. werk has also been done on preparation of a guide folder which would be used along with the signs for identification. The Committee will be monitoring the success of this program and will expand it to identify other features if warranted. The snowdrift monitoring progranme produce no results in 1988 â€" not enough snow! Following briefings by the Federation of Anglers and M.N.R., the conmittee is hoping to start a programme to rehabilitate or establish spawning beds for walleye on the big Rideau lake. Funds would be available from the Ministry of Natural Resources for the programme. The self help water sampling program was successfully continued during the summer of 1988 and the intention is to continue in 1989. (613) 359â€"5740 Although two experimental loon nesting platforms were launched in 1987, the loons weren't looney enough to accept a rent-free home! Monitoring of proposed Rideau Canal Policies, Ontario Hydro 500 KV lines and garbage disposal will continue in 1989. No response was received in 1988 to the invitations to send enquiries, conments or suggestions to the conmittee to investigate. Is the conmittee looking after all your concerns? This is a very active group and is to be conmended for the vast amount or work covered by volunteer labour and an almost nil budget. Next time you hear from us, hopefully the trees will be tapped, and spring will have arrived. TOWNS}!
