ELGIN U.C.W. The Elgin U.C.W. held a dinner meeting June 13/89 at the Stage Coach Inn, Newboro. There were 30 members and 6 guests present. The president, Shirley Bryden, welcomed everyone. Loree Smith said grace before dinner. The worship and the study were deleted for this meeting. Business was kept to essentials. It was agreed to hold a bake sale on Elgin Day, July 8th, on the Church lawn beginning at 9:30a.m. Our September meeting will begin with a pot luck dinner at the Church. Olivet U.C.W. is to be invited to join us. The highlights of the evening were the presentation of Z U.C.W. life memberships to Enid Soper and Phyllis Connell. Irene Guthrie was presented with a gift as she and her husband have moved to Kingston. The evening was a most enjoyable one. Shirley closed it with a benediction. CHAFFEY'S LOCK “.1. The June meeting was held at the home of Pat Lawrence, "Pat's Pet Inn", with about 23 ladies in attendance, Kathy Eberhard was the acting president and opened the meeting with the Ode and Collect and a welcome for all our summer members. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved and Kathy brought up the question of the presidency and asked for volunteers for the job. As none were forthcoming,she offered to take the position. Cathy Crane told the ladies of a project for recycling of tin cans The roll call was "Describe a pet care tip you find helpful". Many good ideas were presented including spay and neuter programmes, immunization, love and attention, grooming and training. Then the hostess, Pat Lawrence, using her dog "Jackie" and her long haired cat "Cricket" gave a very interesting grooming demonstration. She showed the proper tools to be used and answered questions on flea control and grooming products. The animals behaved beautifully and were the hit of the show. President Kathy Eberhard then thanked Pat for the use of her home and the hostesses for the tasty refreshments, and the meeting was adjourned. This was the last meeting until Sept. 19 at the home of Marion Goulah.This will be a "Friendship" meeting and everyone is asked to bring along a friend and/or a neighbour. 6 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN JULY/AUGUST 1989 SOUTH CROSBY FRIENDSHJP CLUB Four members attended the Seniors Games Euchre Tournament and six members the Bowling Tournament in Smiths Falls in May but unfortunately neither group advanced to the Kemptville games. On June 7th eight members attended the Zone Rally in Brockville which was very enjoyable due to the shortening of many of the reports and the excellent entertainment. June 14th was our last meeting for the summer when 21 members answered the roll call after a bountiful pot luck dinner. Laura Bender provided a lovely cake for the June birthdays which included our oldest member, Mildred Burtch who turns 90 years young on June 23rd. Helen Burtch and June Gamble also added another year. The president then opened the meeting with the singing of "O Canada" and the Lord's Prayer. The minutes of the May meeting were read and approved and the treasurer's report given. Phyllis Connell dropped in with a flyer regarding the re-cycling program that is in progress. Items of business included the purchase of a new vacuum cleaner, caretaker fees, etc. Daisy Coon gave a report on the Brockville Zone Rally. Suggestions were given for a bus trip during the fall. The president then wished all a good summer. Four members attended the very informative Seniors seminar in Gananoque on June 15th. All are looking forward to the summer bus trips to the Geritol Follies, the Peterborough Lift Locks, Les Miserables in Toronto and others. Hope you all have a healthy and happy summer. Next meeting will be September 13th when we would like to welcome a number of new members. ELGIN LIONS CLUB NEWS The Annual Ladies Night was held at Steve's Restaurant in Westport on June 19th. President Ralph Sly reported that the club had a good year both in supporting the community through service to it and in receiving sustaining support from the community. On May 29th the club hosted the Russian students and teachers at our regular dinner meeting which was then opened to the public so that interested area residents could meet the guests informally. Upcoming events include participation in Elgin Day; operation of a refreshment tent at the Delta Fair; and on Saturday, August 12th, the 2nd annual Craft Show to be held in the Lions Hall from 10 to 4. Our regular Wednesday evening bingos will continue throughout the summer and a special invitation is extended to vacationers in the area to come out and try their luck. A receptacle for Metal Cans will be located on the High School property by Summers Road. Over the summer months we would ask that you save all ALUMINUM and METAL CANS, removing the ends of metal cans and flattening all together. This process will give us more ' tonnage weight in our bin. If you are a summer visitor in our area who will be leaving before September 12, we have arranged for a small space to be set aside at our Township Building to accept these cans. Please put the cans in a plastic bag for easy removal to our "dumpster" site. PLEASE, PLEASE do not throw any other garbage into the bin at the Township Building or our Dumpster bin.'I'his will defeat the whole purpose of the "Pilot Recycling Day Project", so please give us your full co-operation. W NOTICE TOWNSHIP OF SOUTH CROSBY WASTE DISPOSAL SITE Council of the Corporation of the Township of South Crosby deem it necessary to make the following changes at the Waste Disposal Site: 1) The lock on the gate at the dump site is to be changed, with only the Custodian holding a key. 2) Any Township Resident or Property Owner wishing to dump at the Waste Disposal Site must obtain a permit from the Municipal Office, and same MUST be preSented to the Waste Disposal Custodian prior to entering dumping area. Any Township Resident/Property Owner without a permit or any Township Resident bringing any items or construction materials from outside South Crosby, and also any person from another Township WILL be charged a fee-of $10.00 to dump at the Waste Disposal Site. These regulations WILL become effective July lst, 1989. 3) HOURS of operation for the Waste Disposal Site will be 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday to Sunday, but Closed all day on Tuesday.
