Destined to entrance ex-Navy personnel , reminiscences tape recorded and later transcribed to provide a book full of unexpected glimpses of life at sea, featuring World War 2. Reading it, one has the strangest feeling of being there. Salty Dips #3 offers a new slant on life in the Canadian Navy during the last war. At last we know that all those scarves, Balaclavas, socks etc. were indeed life savers to the poorly clothed Navy men in the early days of service. Many had to remove sodden sea boots and greatcoats to pass them on to the next man on duty above deck. I know that my husband, upon his arrival in England with the Army, in 1939, was sporting a World War l greatcoat and a sorry sight it was. The forces were not prepared for war and the precipitate growth of the Royal Canadian Navy into a force of 100,000 men and women caused, many a "cockup" and in retrospect, much rueful laughter. Civilians should find much to interest and amuse them: for history buffs it is a mine of information. Worth reading. And does your Library have suggestions for you. Joy Fielding has a new book out, GOOD INTENTIONS, all about the marital problems of two 80's women. Irving Wallace's THE GUEST OF HONOR deals with political scheming entwined with the private life of a U.S. president. DARWIN'S SECRET, by Richard Hoyt, is set in the Amazon basin, a timely setting though the book deals not with the destruction of the rainforest, but with mysterious, even surreal, happenings on a riverboat. Like mysteries? Joan Aiken's BLACKGROUND has a theatrical setting that goes from Venice ' to Dorset. Patricia J. MacDonald has a mother deal with her daughter’s brutal murder in NO WAY HOME. Michael Bond has produced a fourth in his new series: MONSIEUR PAMPLEMOUSSE ALOFT. More interested in nonâ€"fiction? PAUL ROBESON by Martin Bauml Duberman is a top-notch biography of the blacklisted, singer and actor. Eric Kierans and Walter Stewart tackle the collapse of free enterprise in Canada in WRONG END OF THE RAINBOW. Someone should send a copy of this book to Michael Wilson. It would provide him with many more reasons for our having a deficit as if he needs And the living any more. Taking up a new hobby? CHICKENS IN YOUR BACKYARD by Rick and Gail Luttman is a good beginner's guide. Redecorating? Then take out LAURA ASHLEY LIVING ROOMS by Kate Corbettâ€"Winder. But if you are in the mood for something that requires true courage, bravery in the face of the unknown; if you wish to go where no sane adult dares to go â€" NO KIDDING by Myrna Kostash deals with the inside world of teenage girls. 50 females present their candid opinions on family, boys, sex, school â€" among other topics. Now, at three books a day, over the summer, one could read some ... Well, you get the picture. We may not be the size of city libraries, but we don't lack for reading.
