10 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN SENIORS WARMING UP FOR GAMES Portland: Rideau Welcome Club No.693 held a regular meeting on March lst, which was preceeded by a Pot Luck luncheon at noon. Thirty-five members enjoyed a splendid assortment of food. A resolution was passed to undertake a youth program. A committee consisting of Margaret Bulloch, Chair, Douglas Crawford and Ken Kentziger was elected to develop a program to assist our youth where possible. The "Drop-in" is going again on Thursday afternoons from 2:00p.m. A good number have been coming along to enjoy the recreation and fellowship. A good number are participating in the Seniors Games and there is room for many more. It is a fun thing and the more the better. The games to be conducted in 1989 are: Carpet Bowling, Contract Bridge, Cribbage, Darts, Euchre, Five-pin Bowling, Golf, Horseshoes, Lawn Bo w ling, Shu ffleboard, Snooker, Softball Throw, Swimming, Tennis and Walking. Anyone 55 years and over and a member of a club is eligible. Each club may enter two teams in each event. A member can only enter in one event due to the events running concurrently. Each club selects the participants who will go to the area games in Smiths Falls in May. The winners at the area games will go on to the District games being held at Kemptville on June 7th. Last year our club had 12 participants and we'd like to have more this year. Canada's Fitweek will be held from May 26th to June 4th, 1989. Our club is invited to visit the Newboro club for dinner at 12:00 noon on April 5th. The next regular meeting will be held on April 5th at 7:30p.m. PORTLAND FIREMEN'S ASSOCIATION On March 4th the Portland Firemen‘s Association and Ladies Auxiliary held the annual Bullhead Supper at the Community Hall. This event, normally sponsored by the A.C.W., was turned over this year to the Firemen, who hope to carry it on in the good tradition maintained for the past ten years. Despite poor weather, a good turnout was received. We would like to express our gratitude to all those who passed on their knowledge of the event to us, to those who donated pies and other articles, and to those who assisted with the work. On March 18th, the annual Firemen's Social was held at the Fireball. The firemen and ladies enjoyed a dinner catered by Margo Welch and Doreen Campbell, followed by the presentation of a few awards, and a euchre tournament. Capt. Don Seward Jr. received his five-year pin. Chief Ab Shire and firefighter Alex McWhirter received their 35 year pins. Fireman of the Year award was presented to Capt. Don Seward Jr. Winner of the 50-50 draw was Paul Scott of Ottawa. Euchre winners were: Men's high, Alex McWhirter; Ladies high, Barb McWhirter; Men‘s low Barry G. Baker, and Ladies low, Gail Eysaman. 1989 celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Portland Fire Station. In conjunction with this occasion, we will be hosting the Leeds and Grenville Fire Prevention and Church Parades in October. We also have various activities planned for the year such as an Open House, Firemen's Games, and dances. We extend an invitation to the public to join us in our celebration. While swimming last summer, Ian noticed that his four year old friend Jonathon Savage was floating under water.When Ian reached him Jonathon was turning blue, so with remarkable presence of mind he dragged his small friend to shore. He was contemplating mouth to mouth resucitation when trained help in the form of his mother arrived, Mrs Shire is a registered nurse and soon had Jonathon breathing again. For his bravery and quick action Ian has received several honours, including the Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award and he and his family were guests at a dinner given in honour of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.To top it all he shook hands with His Royal Highness!.Ian thinks this is an embarrassing fuss but his family are very proud of him. LEGION HOLDS ST. PAT'S EVENTS Portland: Rideau Lakes Branch No.231 held a St. Pat's dinner PORTLAND UCW on March 11th. The Ladies Auxiliary put on a splendid roast pork dinner with all the trimmings which was greatly enjoyed by a very good crowd. A St. Pat's dance was held on March 18th. A moderate crowd enjoyed the music ’of DJ. Arnold Hanna from Lazar Nineteen members enjoyed lunch before Clair Mills called tham to wOrship on the theme "Gentleness".Hymns l, were sung and poems read depicting this theme before guest speaker ,Lois Mowat was introduced Lois told of her trips to China in 1987 Sound.
