12 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN DECEMBER 1990 B a V7“: SEELEY'S BAY U.C.W. The hostess, Freda Davies, welcomed the members to their November meeting. For the devotional, Kathy deGraff, chose remembrance for the theme reminding us that while the flowers have gone for this season, the beauty of nature is always with us. Let us pray for peace for our troubled world. Continuing with this theme, as Helen Sweet presided for the meeting, she read the poem 'In Flanders Fields'. The thank offering was received and dedicated. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as read; the treasurer's report showed a comfortable balance including a bequest from the estate of Sarah Moore. Cards had been sent to the sick and shutâ€"in. Dorothy Heys had delivered boxes of used books to the prison. It was decided to again have our Christmas cookie exchange and remember the shut-ins. Linda Mainse, our speaker, was welcomed as one of us. She had been elected by Kingston Presbytery as the lay representative to General Council and found it a unique experience. She has videos to share with anyone desiring them. Her message to us was our relationship to God. How did we regard God when we were young and what did we expect from Him? As we mature, do we change or are we still childish? Experiencing life with its joys and sorrows our Christian journey is nutured by association with others but as individuals we have to do our own growing. We appreciate Linda sharing her faith with us. A time of fellowship was enjoyed as lunch was served by Freda and Mary Davies. Following his Church Service we marched back to the Legion Hall where the topic of conversation throughout seemed to be about what a great Memorial Service that was. I wholeheartedly agree. The weather, the turnout, the Service and the Royal Military College Pipes and Drums truly made it a day to remember. Saturday, 8 December is our annual Ladies Auxiliary and Seeley's Bay Seniors Christmas Party. The men of Branch 491 will do the cooking, serve the dinner and clean up afterwards. In past years I have noticed some verbal abuse of these fine servants and I hope it happens again this year. Social hour from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner will start at Z p.m. We are forced to cancel Grey Cup this year as it is being played on the west coast again resulting in TV coverage that is at too late an hour to suite our type of function. Adam and Eve Darts continue every Friday at 8 p.m. and you are welcome to join in. Congratulations to Betty Draper on winning the October Early Bird Membership Prize. Next General Meeting: Wednesday, 5 December 1990 at 8:30 p.m. Next Executive Meeting: Wednesday, 19 December 1990 at 8:30 p.m. SEELEY'S BAY SENIORS Orvin Martin, President of Seeley's Bay Seniors, welcomed 25 members present for the November Business Meeting. All joined in singing O'Canada, followed by "Happy Birthday" to Jean Rogers and Rae Lee. Secretary, June Goodwins, read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved as read. The only correspondence was the report of the annual meeting of U.S.C.O. The Treasurer gave her report our Bake Sale at the Legion Bazaar brought a net profit of $115. A motion was made for the Treasurer to have a cheque ready to give a donation to the Legion at the Christmas Party on December 8th, to which we are all invited. Orvin mentioned that 20 seniors came to the luncheon at the Residential Lodge, which was much enjoyed, followed by a Sing Song with Margaret Keith at the piano. We are also asked to sing some Christmas songs at the Legion Christmas Party. Orvin reminded all about the Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph, Seeley's Bay United Church and lunch after at the Legion Hall. He also read a Remembrance Day Poem and thanked our Kitchen Committee for all their work. Then he introduced the Speaker, Joan Lowe, from the Health Unit at Perth, who gave us an informative talk about Elder Abuse, Power of Attorney, Mental Incompetency etc. and passed out pamphlets on those topics. The meeting concluded with the Benediction, followed by delicious refreshments served by the Lunch Committee. Freda Tempest O announcing that . As Poppy Chairman of Seeley's Bay Legion #491, I once again thank those who so generously contributed to our November 11th Poppy Drive. The schools in our area, Joyceville and Holy Name both participated in November 11th ceremonies. My wife Joan ande were priviliged to attend Holy Name School where pupils and staff congregated in the gym under the direction of Principal, Greg Spegal. Poems were read and songs sung by the pupils, Father McGarvey who is a veteran of the Second World War and also was a prisoner of war, assisted in the ceremony. Joyceville School under the direction of their new Principal, Roger Harris also had his staff and pupils participating in a November 11th ceremony. Our area has many small businesses and stores who contribute personally to our Poppy Fund. I would like to personally thank the Bank of Toronto, Seeley's Bay, Mr. Hubert Gordanier (Colonade Club), Paul and Evelyn Gervan (Third World Bazaar) and Joe and Velma Turner. These monies can only be used to assist veterans or their dependants, Senior Citizens, or promotional contests for school pupils. Our Legion's November 11th parade and church service conducted by Reverend Bell was well attended as was the R.M.C. Pipe and Drum Band and Irish singing group who entertained throughout the afternoon at the #491 Legion. Free hot chowder, chilli and hotdogs were served under the capable direction of Velma Turner our Catering Officer. Once again Mrs. Jean Rogers supplied delicious cakes and tarts.
