10 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN 0m 1990 PORTLAND A.C.W. Emmanuel's A.C.W. brought an interesting speaker to their October meeting when Beth Hart of Athens, Ontario came to tell the group about baptismal ministry. She gave an account of a national meeting held in Edmonton to discuss this topic. Her first reaction was one of disappointment because, instead of being inspired to dash out and start preaching, she was forced to sit still and think about the meaning of the term "baptismal ministry" and what skills and gifts she had herself to enable her to minister to others. Then she went on to tell us we all have much to contribute in God’s service and must search out our skills and then make use of them so that our Christianity shows in our way of life. Our November meeting began with a Litany of Intercession from Prayers for Work and Stewardship, a booklet prepared by the Anglican Church Women of the Diocese of Ontario. The material in the booklet is derived from The Book of Alternative Services. This was followed by the devotions from the Anglican Magazine led by Zena Firth and Doris Scott. The members decided that a tea and sale will be held in Myers Hall, Emmanuel Church, Portland on December 1 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. After the business meeting, the officers for l99l were chosen, Rector, The Reverend Paul Kompass; Honorary President, Kathy Kompass; President of the A.C.W. from January to June, Clara Hull; and from July to December, Claire Myers; Vice-President from January to June, Claire Myers; and from July to December, Clara Hull; Secretary from January to June, Reba Bolton; and from July to December, Joan Ross; Treasurer, Shirley Horsfall; Hall Board' Representative, Anne McInrue; Program Conveners, Betty James and Evelyn Swain; Auditors, Reba Bolton and Doreen Campbell; Vestry Representative, Doris Scott. Our first joint rehearsal will be held on December 14, 1990 at Mill Bay Court. Special thanks to parents who responded so quickly in picking up the orders. School Committee At the first regular meeting for '90-91, Rideau Centennial School Committee made a $1,000 donation towards a CD-ROM for our students. The CDâ€"ROM is a compact disc/computer system for encyclopedias. Through special funding from the Ministry of Education, our Board of Education made available to each school a $3,200 CD-ROM unit with schools being required to pay $800 towards the purchase. Our parents group quickly agreed to contribute the $800 plus an additional $200 towards the compact disc. The CDâ€"ROM has arrived and staff are learning how to use it.‘ PORTLAND FIRENEN'S ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TURKEY BINGO r“ DECEMBER I 3- 1990 at B p.m. Portland Legion Hall Rpm Cards/Interviews A large part of November goes into the preparation of report cards and planning of interviews. "If You Can't Remember, Think" That was the theme of our Remembrance Day Ceremony, held in the gym on Friday, November 9. Representatives from the Legion included Mr. and Mrs. Joe Raison, Alf Cassidy and Joe Dillon, who expressed their thanks to the students for presenting such a fitting tribute to our local heroes and for remembering the Canadians presently on active duty in the Persian Gulf. Stephanie Sled and Philip Kompass represented RCS at the community Remembrance Day service held on Sunday in the village. Lihrgy Books Please check carefully at home for books borrowed from the Portland Community Library. Our classes visit the library every second week and have the privilege of borrowing books. If those books are not returned promptly when our class makes its next visit, the cost in both time and dollars is increased considerably. Since the recording system at the library is based on the expectation that books borrowed on class time will be returned during the next class time, we ask that, if possible, students return CORRECTIONâ€" RECYCLING DAYS An Error was made in the last issue of the North Leeds Lantern of the days our recycling bins are available.
