«30003 “TH LEEDS LAN l Elm MEDICAL SERVICE â€" A PRIORITY IN 'IHE PORTIAND AREA A private nonâ€"profit corporation is being formed in the Portland district to help provide badly needed health care in the area. The charitable corporation, to be known as the Portland District Ccmmmity Health Centre will be headed by chairman Iarry Fry. The Portland area was declared an "rmderserviced rural area“ by the Ministry of Health in 1985. Since that time the nunerous interviews to attract a permanent medical doctor have been unsuccessful. Alarge population of senior citizens, families with young children increased several months of the year by a large "floating population" of boaters on the Rideau Canal System, leaves numerous people without transportation to distant medical centres . Proposals have been made to the Ministry of Health to build a canmmity medical centre to house a medical director, nurse and office manager. Dr. Greg Healey and a group of Smiths Falls doctors are prepared to offer their services to the health centre on a contract basis. The Smiths Falls Carmunity Hospital has agreed to provide the partâ€"time services of a dietician and a physiotherapist in addition to an anergency nurse on contract. Area residents have provided over one himdred (100) letters of support to the Ministry of Health as they anxiously await an answer to their suhnission. Dr. Jeanette Hamilton of Smiths Falls is provding temporary partâ€"time service to alleviate the present crisis situation. There is a waiting list for her services and a mmber of people are turned away each week. The preposal has received the support of many area doctors who are already overworked. To assist the volunteer ccmnittee, area residents and sunner residents who wish to support the nonâ€"profit charitable organization can address the letters to Dr. RobertMad‘Iillan,Assistant Deputy Minister of Camrunity Health, Queen's Park, Toronto and deliver the letters to any one of the following cannittee manbers: Larry Fry, Chairnan â€" Harlem Earle Gallagher, Vice Chairmn â€" R.R. 3, Portland Judy Rogers, Treasurer - Portland Sandra Chant, Secretary - Portland Anna Greenhorn , - Phillipsville Shirley Bryden - Elgin or Chantry Derek Turnbull â€" Portland Margaret Stinson - Portland Ken Burns â€" Portland Mry Sutcliffe â€" Portland Stephen Fournier - Chantry t SAND Waiever you need, call . . . .
