Bob Runciman's Spring Newsletter and the poll clearly shows the majority don't support two major recommendations to change Ontario's liquor laws. When asked whether you agree with the idea of bringing your own alcohol to restaurants, 82% said NO while only 17% favoured the idea. This is one of the recommendations contained in the government's study of the current liquor laws. One respondent asked, "What happens to your bottle if you don't finish it - would some people decide to finish it on the way home in the car?" Another questioned, "I understand the restaurants would charge a corkage fee â€" how much would they charge? Am I really saving any money?" Another recommendation made to the government is to extend operating hours for bars to 2:00 a.m. 80% of the respondents disapproved of this suggestion, only 15% favoured it. One constituent stated,"Government policies appear to be taking the exact opposite course in solving today's social problems. Instead of making alcohol and drugs more readily available, they should be curtailing it." Another person said, â€With the current push on drinking and driving, why would anyone want to increase bar hours?" The questionnaire also four that 60% support the curre ; legal drinking age of 19, wh e 36% don't. Many responde' ts suggested, "The drinking * {0 should be raised to 21".On 1 other hand we received tl. ; comment, "Selecting an a; for drinking is difficult, bl. if a person is considered 01(. enough to vote then that person has to be considered old enough to be responsible for his or her drinking habits." There were two questions on the subject of auto insurance. 48% feel the government should be involved in the provision of auto insurance, while 42% disagreed. 10% were undecided. One resident stated, "Yes, if government involvement would reduce present rates, I would favour it." On the contrary one person said, "Government should not control insurance but rather, monitor it." There was an even split of 42% in favour and 42% against the idea of having a private sector no-fault auto insurance system. 16% were undecided. Welipon - 273-3244 15
