PORTLAND SENIORS Rideau Welcome Club No 693 held a regular meeting and picnic on July 8th. A short business meeting preceeded a picnic lunch at the home of our president, Mary Sutcliffe. 24 members answered the roll call and four visitors were welcomed. A special welcome was extended to Stewart Vissor following his lengthy illness. Following lunch the members were taken by trail through Mary's spacious grounds. The outing was enjoyed by all and a vote of tr-anks was extended to Mary. The club participated in Summer Fest 87 by operating a flea market on July 25th, which was well attended and the results were satisfying. The winner of the hand carved loon, donated by Sam and Lavina Byington, was Barbara Card, Westport. The hooked rug made by Ellen Merryweather, was won by Dee Heffernan of Crosby. The proceeds from the raffle replaces the $500 donated to the Senior Citizen Housing. A number of members enjoyed a bus tour on July 29th to Parkwood, Oshawa and Cullen Gardens, nitby. The tour was sponsored by the Rideau Horticultural Society. 1' ' Leslie LEGION FISH DERBY Ridcau L rw&â€"Brancii No 231 held the Annual Fish Derby on July .16-17â€"18, concluding with a Fisherman's Ball on July 18th. The number of entries were down 1 this year, but . some fine specimens were entered. The Small Mouth Bass Class was won by Don Pyne of Elgin and the Large Mouth Class by Young of Smiths Falls. There ' were no entries in the Pike class. Prizes were awarded at the Fisherman's Ball where everyone enjoyed dancing to the Sea Breeze orchestra. The Ladies Auxiliary provided the usual fine lunch. A general thank you to all those who participated. A special thank you to those who sold registrations and supplied weighâ€"in stations, namely, Elgin Hotel, Pine Glen Lodge, Elgin, Louis Burtch Bait Shop, Norris Bait Shop, Murphy ' 5 Sport Shop , Dave's Corner Garage, Sled's Grocery Store, Mr. Gas â€" Lombardy Rd., Dave's Bait Shop Hwy 43 and the Waterside Restaurant. A special thank you also to those who donated merchandise for prizes: Yamaha Dealer, Crosby, Elgin Hotel, Georgie McNally, Portland and Labatt 's Brewery Ltd. The branch participated in the Portland Summer Fest 87 by providing a colour party for the parade and running a bingo on July 25th. The branch provided colour parties for the Elgin Day Parade on July 11th and the Delta Fair parade on July 28th. The next general meeting will be held on Sept. 3rd. YOUR COUNCIL AT WORK Bastard & South Burgess Pat McManus Anna Greenhorn The cleanest people in Leeds County must be those taking advantage of the new facilities in Beverley Lake Township park. 2626 paid their 25¢ each during the month of July to have a shower. The hot water tanks and water supply were sufficient to the occasion, much to the satisfaction of the Park Superintendent. Park Revenue for the month of July showed an increase of $4,443.46 from the same month last year. The overall increase for the year to date is $2250.48. One has only to visit any store in Delta and find park visitors patronizing local businesses to realize the financial impact on the area. Phase Two of the Colborne Street project in Portland is complete. This project was done by day labour under the direction of the Road Superintendent and is a credit to all those involved, especially since there was a saving of approximately $10,000. by using this method. Mill Bay Court, Portland, held an Open House for the public which was very well attended. Many residents opened their apartments and welcomed the visitors. Compliments abounded, it was a most enjoyable day. This leads to the next point, Council requested a grant for a Housing update survey. The Township has been awarded a $90,000. P.R.I.D.E. project grant. We believe this is the first one awarded to a small (rural) municipality. A lot of work went into the preparation of the submission for this grant, and the committee should be pleased with the first fruits of their efforts. The waste disposal hours seem to have made most users very happy. The many favourable comments makes Council happy too! Unfortunately, this programme will be terminated on Sept. 7. (9:30 am â€" 5:30 pm) A Roads Needs Study has been commissioned to be completed in the late spring of 1988. As well, Council has been wrestling with the problem of Forfar Road at Young's Hill. A public meeting was -held in Forfar Community Hall on Aug. 11 to get public input into the retention of the vista and the trees and problem of supplying a safe road. The meeting was well chaired by Doug Bond, LACAC Chairman , who gave everyone an opportunity to be heard. Council was given an insight into the respect people have for the trees as well as the need for a better road. Those attending were given an insight into the difficulties Council faces in trying to solve this thorny problem. How nice to see the J mobile water testing laboratory of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment is at work in Delta. This is confirming that the results of the unique water clean up in Delta are positive.
