12 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN ELEV'S B Seeleys Bay U. C. W. Our hostess Helen Sweet, welcomed more than 50 guests and members to our October meeting. Neighbours from Olivet, Lyndhurst and St. Peters attended to hear our special speaker. President Joyce Simpson opened the meeting with a timely and beautiful verse. Myrtle Simpson took the devotional meditation on "Thanksgiving". We should never forget to thank God for all the good things we receive, not only at Thanksgiving but all through the year. If we are sincere, we will show our appreciation inthe way we treat others - with our willingness to help and our friendship and support. Minutes were approved and treasurers and card reports were given. Offering was dedicated. A request for financial help was read from "Interval House" also a letter from our UCW rally. Our special speaker wasMrs. Jackie Carpenter. She gave a most interesting talk on her recent trip to Russia. This was her fifth visit by train - comparing Russia's size with Canada. Travelling from West to East took 8 days and 8 nights. No food is served on the train, each person took their own. It was interesting to hear how friendly her travelling companions were. They willingly shared whatever they had - as Jackie had not brought her own. The usual and favourite seemed to be meat (not cooked). Mrs. Carpenter, this Hme had the Chance to visit schools - which particularly interested her. All the pupils wore the same uniforms and attended 6 days a week. The uniforms were provided for everyone regardless of her station in life. This was noted wherever she went there appeared to be no 1300? pEOple - that is everyone was treated the same. There is no welfare or handouts of any kind â€" everyone had a job of some kind - menial or not. Medical services were provided where needed. As to their religious faith â€" their loyalty is for Lenin and no weather keeps them from attending "specials" for him. No unemployment can be seen everyone is given something to do. Because of the many times their country has been invaded - defense is their top priorty. This is a very short report on the many interesting facts Jackie had time to bring up â€" it is good to hear about the life style of other countries from one who has been there. Sincere thanks and appreciation were expressed - after which all enjoyed a social time. taken and St. John's A C W The October meeting was held at the home of Suzanne Gatenby and opened with the Guild Prayers.
